Gonna walk in my first 5K on Feb. 18...any tips?
Hi all,
I just found out this afternoon that there will be a 5K walk/run here in Merritt Island, sponsored by our local high school as a fund raiser. I have decided to enter into it and walk (can't run cause of back problems) the 5K (3.1 miles). This will be a HUGE accomplishment for me. This is something I NEVER, EVER thought I could or would ever do. I have never been in good shape and I have bulging discs in my lower back, fibromyalgia, heel spurs on both heels, and restless leg syndrome, among other things, as well as being waaaaay overweight at 5'7" and 129.8 lbs (yeah, just got a new scale and this is what it showed I weighed just in underclothes). I thought I was more than that, cause my other scales were horrible!
I have set a goal to be able to walk this 5K, and my husband and 12 year old son have decided to do it as well. Although, my husband is considering running it! So, we have decided to start training in the short period of time that we have left in order to do the best we can. I am wondering if anyone else has done a 5K (from being an out of shape, overweight person to a wannabe fit person) and how you did with it, if you have any training tips, etc. I have already started working out more this past week, just to get fit and try to lose 26 pounds in the next 13 weeks for my husband's company picnic. I eat good, and have started exercising more. Today I walked my son to his bus stop, which was 8/10ths of a mile round trip. Then, I walked up there again and back this afternoon, to pick him up. So, that was almost 2 miles. I plan on walking the track at the healthclub everyday, or most days if possible, to build up endurance to be able to walk the 3 miles. I also want to do some cardio, like maybe kickboxing, tae bo or the firm. I have all of these on DVD. I also just started going back to Curves last week.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!
