Smile Looking for health and fitness buddy with a good sense of humor

But first things first...

I've had a rough 2005 with the loss of both a family member and a best friend. Others very close to me continue to face major health issues, including my husband. We all have these unfortunate events happen in our lives; mine just seem to have happened all at once!

During the past STRESSFUL 7 months, I managed to drop away from any exercising and any healthy lifestyle and because of that, I've gained 30 lbs.

It's time to put a focus on *my* health and start working towards a goal of losing those 30 lbs that were put on in such a short time. I'm confident I can do it! (Well, pretty confident - lol!) I started inching towards that goal last month by hiring a trainer.

I love to laugh and even poke some fun at myself on occasion. If someone else here has a goal similiar goal to mine - healthy weight loss through diet, exercise, personal accountability, and a POSITIVE attitude - and is also looking for a "buddy" then please let me know.

Oh, and as a newcomer, just want to say "Hi!" to everyone here and wish you all MUCH success in attaining your goals

Default love to be of help and support

I'm sorry to hear about your love ones. Stress can make anyone lose track of oneself. I have been up and down in my relationship with my family, friends and self. In trying to balance everything in my life, I realized that I seem to put my life on hold for everyoneelse.
I decided to turn my focus on myself. I have looked at my life and realized that the one who needs my attention, acceptance, patience and kindness, is me. Together we can place our lives back in the order in which it was inteneded to be.
I'm new to site as well. I have joined curves for my exercise routine and have been truly commited to the workout 3-4 times a week as well as doing some other quick workouts on dvd and walk away the pounds.

Any guidance you can give will be helpful.

Thanks dawn. You're right, you do have to start somewhere thinking about helping yourself and it *IS* hard to do!!! Doesn't that seem wierd? You'd think it would be just the opposite?!!

I've also been happy to do the caretaker thing for people that were going through just awful health crisises (is that a word??), but once the situation was over or resolved, it seemed like yet another crisis was at the door - it just never ends. So I guess I'm realizing that I have to put myself in the equation too. No, I'm not facing a life or death illness, but I WILL be if I don't get my act together here soon and take control. JMO anyway.

I'm a newcomer as of today; I found the site last night, had a good laugh at the name (too funny!!) and read a few stories and tips and decided to join. So we can be new members together

I'm doing 2 - 1hour sessions with a trainer. Each session is 30 mins on the treadmill and 30 of weights and stretching. I've been with her for one month now and the 30 mins on the treadmill is actually a gradual improvement from the 10 mins I started with - yea! Not that I'm going to be doing any 5K's or anything here in the next few weeks - lol!

I'd like to increase the frequency of activity when my trainer is NOT with me...this is going to be a problem I'll just have to overcome. Back to the "everyone, then me" syndrome of taking care of all BEFORE I start my activity, walk, whatever.

One thing I was going to mention and ask anyone that happens to read. This has happened to me in the past and is happening now and I'm not sure how to address: The more I exercise, the hungrier I get - I mean HUNGRY stomach growling, twisting hungry! Anyone else and if so, any suggestions? (helpful ones that is... )

Best wishes dawn and keep me posted with what's happening with you.

Hunger is your body's defense against starvation. The reason you are getting hungrier is because your metabolism is speeding up which is burning more calories and your body needs more "fuel" to continue functioning properly (so, it thinks). It thinks "with all this fuel I am burning, I need to take in more so I can work without going to my reserves." (ie stored bodyfat) You can increase your intake as long as it is appropriate to your exercise output. We sometimes reward a good workout (600 calories burned) with say, pizza nad exceed or output, and basically shoot outselves in the foot.

When you feel hungry, you can drink water to satisfy the hunger pangs. The stomach lining is filled with nerve endings and when they get close together (stomach is empty) it signals hunger. As you fill the stomach, the walls are stretched adding space between the nerve endings, thus ending hunger pangs... Maybe by filling that void with water, it will do the trick...

Not an expert, but that's what I know...lol Hope it helps...

Well thanks Deanna, I'll certainly try that! I am a great water drinker and always drink around 16 ozs during my workout (AFTER ab work tho!!). It shouldn't be a problem to drink a little more during the rest of the day too. I think I'm lucky in this respect as I hear many people say they really struggle to drink liquids throughout the day - at least that's one problem I DON"T have - yea!!

( I do have to watch it at night tho or it's a midnight potty run for me )

Thanks!

Deanna's right!!! Usually, when you "think" you're hungry, your body is dehydrated.

Good call Deanna!

Hunger and exercise: my appetite is definitely bigger after a large workout session. I eat a banana or whole wheat toast with a small smear of p.b. aobut an hour before I exercise (kickboxing class or cardio+weights at my YMCA). Then I eat a meal after I shower. If I stay hungry during the day, I do extra lean protein but not a lot of carbs (hard-boiled egg whites, lowfat Laughing Cow wedges, cheese stick, piece of deli turkey).

I just came back from the Y and had a pretty big dinner (multi-grain pasta with chickpeas, broccoli and sauce, a little fresh parmesan on top). Plus the dark chocolate. I don't actually like it much, but 2 squares will do it for my sweet tooth and I never binge on it. OTOH, if I don't totally love it I should probably skip the calories and just not eat it. Certainly food for thought!

Smile 2006... a thinner me!

Hi! I'm game to join you too! I'm starting (again) tomorrow with regular exercise and diet (and so is hubby). I haven't actually weighed in yet - gonna do that tomorrow morning. I was on this site last summer/fall, then kind of fell away and after spending 1/2 day of planning out my new year last week, I find that diet and exercise is at the top of the list. So.... we're going tomorrow morning to pay the gym fees and get going again.

We were both doing Body for Life, but I found that the diet wasn't working for me, though I am still following the exercise routine. I'm using WW, which I find is flexible enough to use with a family to feed because I can eat what they eat - well, sort of.

I do notice that the time I am MOST motivated to start my diet - and really am thinking, "What's the big deal - just don't eat so much".... is RIGHT AFTER I've finished off a Snickers or bag of M&M's!!!!
