This thread is a sub-set of the 300+ thread. This group is for those dealing with the challenges of having a significant amount of weight to lose and being fit which becomes harder after 40. If you're an old or new friend and not over 40 and feel this is the place to post, jump right in.
WOWIt seems like years since I've started a thread!!! What fun!!
The best thing about all I've gone through this year? Not having to work on Saturdays and having time alone by myself (OleAlvin is working) It's so nice.
I went ot Bunco last night and had a very nice time. It 's always fun
I have been very motivated this week and I have made myself a promise. Since OleAlvin started his new schedule, then I'm g oing to get back into a routine too. I am going to get up and go exercise every day. Yes, every day except the weekends!!! AND I'm going to learn how to cook again. Try as I might I can't find an excuse to justify not cooking when I will be getting home form work at least an hour before he does. If anyone happens to have a good excuse, let me know and I'll use it! So Thursday night I went to the diet.com site that I paid money for and never use, and printed out the weekly menus for next week and OleAlvin went to the store last night with my list, so next week, it's going to be planned controlled meals!!!
You gals have to help me. If I don't report in that I've followed my plan, send me an IM or email or PM or even get on the phone and call me and tell me to get my butt back in gear!! I know I have just gotten lazy, and yes maybe a little depressed, but I know how much better I feel when I exercise regularly, so why can't I do it?
Okay, so much for the moaning and groaning, Have a great weekend everyone. I have to go check and see what I've sold on Ebay this week.t
Ok I got my pics ready for my Holiday Card Exchange! I am sooo disgusted with my pic I can't tell you how much!! As soon as we walked into the studio the static just took over my hair and it just flopped down flat! It is disgusting along with that double chin too! Uuggh! I have GOT to get this weight off of me! I can't stand myself!
It was quite an adventure with the pics. My dear son will NOT pose for a professional camera but these guys did great! They catch them in candid shots! I have one of him standing at the Christmas tree touching one of the green balls. Also one of him with a Reindeer he discovered! I have a disc so I'll see if I am talented enough to put them on the pic thread!
Well I'm off to do the regular laundry now that the winter clothes are all done! I'll check back later to see if anyone posted...I know you all are busy during the weekends but I NEED you to post so I stay out of the kitchen!
Hi girls! Life's been going on around here. I'm sure it's been going on where you are too. I just seem to be so overwhelmed.
The Baby called yesterday morning because he wanted to borrow the van to move his twin bed from upstairs to his house. He was expecting his Fraternity roommate in from Buffalo, NY last night and he needed some place for him to crash. Honey and I decided to make the most of his visit and lined up a bunch of his stuff so he had to make a trip with all of that before we let him take the bed. NOT what he was expecting!!!!!
Honey has been off work since Thursday on vacation. Thursday I booked a quick job and a lunch for us so we took off for the mall. Yesterday we stayed in bed for a bit in the morning and then I went shopping in the afternoon. I had bought a bunch of towels from Kohls last July when they were really cheap. I bought all white ones at the time because neither of the boys actually had their houses yet so I took them back to exchange them for other colors. #1 Son also needed a mattress pad so I went in the afternoon because they had a huge 50% off sale. Got the pad for 50% off, then had a 15% off coupon AND a $10 coupon so the pad cost me $9.00 in the end for a queen size. I thought that was pretty good.
We got up this morning and went to breakfast with friends. When we got hom #1 Son was ready to go with Honey to his house and do some of the things that needed two people to accomplish.
Honey's old boss, who has moved on as Plant Manager at another building, emailed Honey and invited us to THEIR Christmas party for tonight. It sounds like fun. Dinner, dancing, music and games. We haven't see the old boss since he moved to the other plant and I haven't seen his wife since the last function, probably a year and a half ago. They're very nice people. Pete always looked after Honey, and the boys for that matter, as they go waaaay back. Pete recruited Honey to work for him at their LAST company and then begged him to come work for him when the other company went out of business and Pete moved here. The boys also worked there some years ago, the Baby as a co-op in the Engineering Department and #1 Son in the IT Department.
Well, I'm sure that's all information you really didn't care about!
Anyway, the point was, that I need to get my hair fixed, do my nails and in general get ready in another couple of hours. Oh, that reminds me, I should probably go up and take my knee pills so I can actually dance a dance with Honey tonight.
The scale has been pretty kind to me this week. I'm not posting a loss until Monday as that's my "official" day. But it's nice to know that it's moving.....DOWN!!!!
2cute: Your rendition of the granddaughters doing the tree is so cute. I bet they're just thrilled that you let them have a whole tree to themselves. Hope you've recouperated. Good job not letting your DH off the hook when he offered to help. I love it when we surprise the heck out of them and react completely different than they expect.
Terri: I know you're gone, but I hope you have a safe trip with the horse. I take it there's room at your stable for one more. I hope it's nothing serious with your mom. I know I see my mom slowing down finally. She was 84 this past July. Winter is hard on her. She gets so warm wearing a heavy sweatshirt and big coat and when she's shopping or church or whatever, she doesn't shrug off the coat. So by the time she gets outdoors again she been sweating because she's so warm and then gets chilled when she goes out in the cold. I've tried to convince her to layer and shed that stuff while she's inside but she just doesn't get it. * Sounds like your newly acquired family can be a little challenge. I'm glad that your DH has been able to reconnect with them all. Life is too short. How is his brother doing, BTW?
Elaine: I'm thinking the next time you check in here you will be at home. Hope you had a safe trip. Do you travel often, or is this just those once a year type things? Honey hates to travel for work. This has been the year with the most travel for him ever.
Ruth: Unfortunately, grabbing the Baby by the ear would only make him dig his heels in further. He is just like his momma, unfortunately, which means stubborn!!!!! Hope all is well at your end.
BarbG: I'm glad you're going to be able to get back into a routine. I sure can sympathize/empathize with a lack of one. I keep saying that once I KNOW what's going on around here from night to night, I'll start cooking. We'll see.
Lilion: FOUR (4) POUNDS!!!! How great is that!!! WooHoo for you!!!! When I'm paying attention, I can be very good eating out. The important part of that statement is "when I'm paying attention". I have found a wonderful salad at our favorite little neighborhood brew pub as well as a really nice salad offering at Ruby Tuesday's (avoid the salad bar and all of its trappings) as well as TGI Fridays. Don Pablos has Momma's Skinny Enchiladas that aren't bad. Anyway, I've pretty much figured out what I can have, where and it works when I work it.
Valerie: I think you're still on the road. I'm trying to remember when you said you'll be back. Anyway, hope you're safe.
Leeanne: I'm sooooo glad to see you back. I'm glad the card reached you at a time you really needed it. It sounds like you're really busy with the girls and end of the year formals. The Baby is off tonight to the Fraternity Christmas party. Took his suit with him last night. My only sadness is that I don't get to see him all dressed up this year. He does clean up good, if I don't say so myself!!!!
Michelle: I'm glad you got all your Summer stuff put away. I feel like I've been doing laundry for days. I told Honey the part I will like best about the boys moving out is the extra closet space. I love the candid pictures of the kids. One year I took the Baby to see Santa and he just wouldn't look at the camera to save his soul. The picture they snapped caught him looking up into Santa's eyes with his little hand on the big guy's beard. The girl apologized and said she would keep trying. I told her, "no way. That is the most precious picture. I want that one." You just don't get THOSE pictures every day.
Well girls, I think I'm caught up. I will talk to you later and let you know how the party went. Love ya bunches.
Hi, I've never posted here before. I started out about 2 years ago at 320 and have been plugging away since then. I'm 41, living with my sig other Rob and cat Chloe here in Brooklyn.
I've posted at other places here at 3fc, just looking around for other places and people who can relate to what I'm going through and who I can relate to
Marge welcome to the group! I think you will find a home here as these women are the best! You will get support, understanding and any help you will need along the way! So post often so we can get to know you and you can get to know us!!
Hi guys...
I am hitting replys from this thread only. Just missed the entire last thread all together. *blush*
Barb .... Your new found enthusiasm has inspired me to !!!! Thanks so much for sharing with us. Take advantage of the ole crock pot and cooking won't be so hard on you after a day of work.
Michelle.... I can't wait to see that picture you are complaining about.
I am posting since you "need" us. I need you guys too.
Thin... I LOVED your strategy on your youngest son.
Way to go !!!!!
The party you are going to tonight sounds like fun. I wish I had a such an active social life.
Dragonwoman / Marge..... WELCOME !!!!! So glad to have you join us.
Congratulations on your great weight loss. We can all learn a thing or two from you.
Welcome Marge Congratulations on your weight loss so far! The ladies here are wonderful people who will definitely give you support and encouragement.
Thin, I think you just won shopper of the year, for your mattress pad purchase! Well done! How did you go at the Christmas party? We had our street christmas party here last night, but I managed to just have some bbqed 'thin' chicken rissoles and a bun + salad, and to say no to the cheesecake!
Michelle, I know what you mean about photos ... I can't stand myself at the moment and there's no way I'm going to be in any photos this Christmas! I realised the last photos I have are from April graduation, and I just haven't felt good about getting any photos since then. Guess it's time to get my @$$ into gear and do something about it!
Barb, so good to hear you are feeling motivated this week ... I wish I could get motivated enough to plan ahead for meals etc! I have the exercise thing happening, but each week Thursday shopping day rolls around and its rush rush rush so I don't get time to do it. What do you sell on ebay? I have always wanted to try buying and selling on ebay but I just haven't worked up the courage. When I work with computers and the net all the time, it's just weird for me to be nervous about it, isn't it??
2Cute, not good enough! You can't go missing a whole thread! Gee ... then you would be like ... well ... me!! Just kidding How are you doing? I have missed so much over the last few months. You sound really motivated!
Lilion you asked about Christmas in Australia ... well for a start its HOT! We are heavily influenced by the northern hemisphere, so we put up christmas lights (including light 'icicles' that hang from the eaves), have a christmas tree with tinsel and baubles etc .. but we tend to treat Christmas as a more social time. We have lots of BBQs, often there is a street party where part of a street is blocked off, we set up a BBQ and everyone brings food and drink and just relaxes. Closer to Christmas (particularly Christmas eve) lots of families will drive around to look at the Christmas lights, and those people who have large displays will sit on their front lawn with food and drink (as a sort of picnic I guess) and have social time with their neighbours. I don't think we have poinsettias as Christmas flowers, although some of our decorations have "snow" and snowmen etc in them ... but that's tending to be less as time goes on.
We tend to have some warm food for Christmas lunch - a ham, or turkey, or chickens, and maybe some roast potatoes or other cooked vegetables, but we usually have salads and nibbles on the table. A lot of people serve cold cooked ham slices, and salad, for Christmas lunch. Instead of Christmas pudding or something hot, we have pavlova or cheesecakes for dessert. A lot of people go down to the beach or have a picnic Christmas lunch. Christmas dinner is usually leftovers from lunch, because noone wants to eat much! Last Christmas we went down the beach on Christmas night, and watched the ocean change colours as the sun went down, and the kids waded around in the water, and jumped the waves.
I love Australia and like our Christmases, but I would love to go visit my parents in Germany for a Christmas before they come back, to experience a real white Christmas!
Ok, well I have had two extra kids over here last night, so I need to go drop one of them home ...
It is not such a good morning, I feel crappy! I don't know what has got me, but I have been feeling poorly the last day and today. Normally I would be at Sunday school by now. I just got out of my pjs, and didn't care if I did or not.
I hope all of you are well. I will check in tomorrow. Gee, I hope this wears off by then. See you later, Ruth
I've bought a few things on ebay. I get nervous waiting to get it, feeling a little like I'm operating on blind faith. Can't complain about any of the purchases. I bought a Christmas gift for bf this year, software at half the price it would have been otherwise. I've sold some books that way too (when Half.com existed on its own).
I'm getting to the point where I'm starting holiday baking. I give away cookies and breads as gifts. So I'm going to have pay attention and not dip into the cookie jar too much before they're out of the house. I thought it was pretty close to a miracle that I managed to lose weight over T-day holiday, I think TOM and water weight played a small part in that, ha. It's really hard for me not to indulge at the holidays, I love eggnog, cookies, chocolate. All the things that are all around the place at Christmas.
thin, I got some towels at target that are so soft and wonderful. kind of a non-food indulgence for me
Leanne, sitting looking out the window at the first snowfall of the winter, it's hard to picture playing in the waves for Christmas and having barbeques! sounds wonderful.
Well, I got back from Tokyo yesterday -- arrived in Seattle at around 8:30am, and drove home to Portland. It was great to be home. Andre is so cute -- he really misses me when I'm gone. Such a contrast from earlier this summer when he didn't like me and was being mean to me. Glad that changed .
I travel quite a bit for business. I have about a dozen people that work for me in Tokyo -- I try to get there once a quarter, but I hadn't been there since May. I don't really care for business travel, mostly because coach seats stopped fitting me. I've had to ask for seatbelt extenders also . But, this time, I managed to fit on my own side of the seat .
I was all excited to get on the scale when I got home, and I didn't lose any weight . Oh well. I know I have lost weight this month -- I meet with my trainer in 2.5 hours, so I'll see how much fat and inches I've lost.
I got caught up with The Biggest Loser last night (Tivo is great). What an inspiration! It was so amazing to see how some of those folks had changed.
Marge, welcome to the board -- I'm new here also .
Ruth, sorry to hear that you're down -- hope it changes soon .
Barb, good for you! I thought that I would get into cooking when Marie and Andre moved up here, but it turns out that no one besides me eats my cooking. I find it hard to motivate myself to cook just for myself.
Hello ladies! Geez, no one's been here since 2:00 this afternoon. Where is everyone??? Hope you're out doing something fun like putting up lights, decorating trees or something else that's exciting!!!
Honey and I had a wonderful time at the party last night. I was so glad we went. Honey's old boss' wife was glad to see us. She said that her husband hadn't mentioned that we were coming until she was moping around the house getting ready. When he asked what was wrong and she said she wasn't happy about going because she wouldn't know anyone, he told her we were coming and then she got excited. Get this, she said last year a woman sitting with them asked what she does for a living and when she told her that she was a nurse the woman said "Ewww". How nasty is that? Well, I told her that when I tell people what I do they don't take me seriously so we were in the same boat. She said "you guys always just take me for me." I guess it must be hard being married to a big wig in the company (he's the plant manager) and try to fit in with some of the hoity toity wives. Anyway, she is a real hoot and we had a wonderful time.
Honey and I got in a few dances. I so love to dance with my Honey. He ticks me off just a little because he knows I love to waltz to Annie Murray's "Could I Have This Dance" but he will never request it. He always makes me do it. He doesn't mind dancing it with me, he just doesn't want to request it. I know I should get over it, but I just want him to be the "guy". Ok, well maybe that's NOT a "guy thing". Ok, I'm over it. I will continue to request the song.
Apparently there wasn't anyone else that waltzes at the party. Because for the longest time we were the only ones on the dance floor for that song. But afterwards, some woman that we didn't know came to the table and told us how lovely our dance was and how much she enjoyed watching us. That was sooooo nice!!!!
I did well for dinner, just a tiny bit of rice, a tiny bit of pasta, mixed veggies, a nice size salad and some roast beef. The food was really tasty but I was happy with what I had. Oh, to be honest, I also had a tiny canolli and a small (2"x2") square of a pineapple cake. But we had not had anything since breakfast, of which I packed 1/2 up and brought home, so I feel as if I did real well.
Today I had 2 hot dogs for brunch and then we went out to Joe's Crab Shack for dinner. I didn't choose too well there, a Seafood Linguini in Alfredo Sauce, but again, that's all I had all day. I've been drinking water and diet soda so I feel like I've been pretty good.
Tomorrow is my WI (not Wisconsin) day so I will let you know if the morning how well I've done "officially". I'm hoping I can finally move that dang Christmas Tracker seeing as I gained after I put the darn thing in my signature.
Marge: Hi there! Welcome to our corner of the boards. We're glad to have you joining us.
Michelle: Good to see you popping in on a more regular basis. You surely were missed for those months you were AWOL!
2cute: We kind of pulled a fast one on #1 Son today as well. He was making a trip to his house and Honey came up with a brass lamp from the basement. Son left it sitting on the 1/2 wall by the front door so when Honey and I went over to his house to help him out this afternoon, we took the lamp. Now it's his to get rid of if he doesn't want it.
Leeanne: Thanks for the "shopper of the year" status, but I have to say, you get what you pay for sometimes. #1 Son put the mattress pad on his bed and put his fingers through the chintzy muslin sides of the thing. Guess what's going back to the store tomorrow!!!!! Thanks for telling us about your Australian Christmas. What nice traditions! I wish our neighborhood did more "friendly" stuff. The most we get is a few neighbors gathering on a front lawn on Halloween after all the kiddies are done trick or treating.
Ruth: I sure hope you're not coming down with something really nasty. NO flu!!!! That would be stinky right before Christmas!!!
Elaine: Glad you got home safely. I hear you on the air travel. I'm glad you've done so well as to fit in the seats again. Honey and I went to Vegas last December and between us we bought the third seat. We were very happy we did. So much nicer to have just a little bit more room.
Ok, girls, I'm all caught up again. Hope to see a little more activity tomorrow since it's finally a weekday again. Love ya bunches!!!
I'm just checking in before I get ready to go exercise. YES I am going. I'm up have had breakfast, have lunch ready, and I AM going to exercise. I joined the exercise group and I've committed to 400 hours of exercise for the month of December, and I'm behind!!! I dug out my hypnosis tapes last night, but the tape player didn't work. I guess I need to buy some in CD form, I'd better check out Ebay.
Today is liable to be an interesting day at work. 4 of the younger girls that "party" together all took off/didn't show for work Friday and 2 of them are in my dept and boy was Pam (the manager) pissed!!! We'll see if she carries out any of her threats....
I've been up and attempted my exercise. I managed 25 minutes on the stationary bike but my body just wasn't into it. I'll have to do the rest tonight. I woke up at 3:30 with the beginnings of a headache. Must be a storm coming in or something because its allergy or sinus type of headache. Going to be a long day today.
We made the trip down to mom's on Saturday to bring CoCo up here. Geez, she is a really big horse. I felt really bad taking mom's horse even though I know its the best for both of them. But it felt like I was doing it to her instead of for her. The place seemed so lonely. Maybe it was the gloomy weather but I hated leaving mom with just her dog and cat. I think we might have her thinking about selling down there and moving with us when we find a place with land. I know she is getting really lonely down there now that there is not as much to do outside as there used to be.
We got home Saturday evening just in time to shower and jump in the car again to go have Mexican with six of DH's cousin's. We do this about twice a year so it isn't just that they see each other at funerals. Which has happened about once a year for the last few years. It was fun but I was glad to get back home and get snuggled in under the blankets.
Yesterday was Sunday School. I then worked on getting all the financial stuff all caught up. Geez, that took forever. The curse of being an accountant and being very detailed about the financial stuff. I let it get behind too (not the paying part) because it feels like work since I work on the computer all day long. I have to do a better job of keeping track and doing the budget before I pay stuff.
I didn't even get a nap in yesterday afternoon. I was trying but the phone rang and it was some lady looking for a guy who used to own a dog named Sadie. We used to own a bulldog named Sadie and had to give her up to Bulldog Rescue because she was just way too much to have along with Bear. This was probably two years ago. She called looking to see if any of her previous owners wanted her back. Poor Sadie is either a product of bad breeding, being taken from her mom way too early, or the first owner played too rough because she is very hyper and aggressive. She attacks when you try to discipline her. We thought maybe it was because of Bear and that she would settle down if she were the only dog. Guess not. The rescue lady told her that Sadie would have to be put to sleep because of her behaviorial issues. I have "known" that since she left us but I certainly didn't want to have to be part of the discussion to have it done. It really upset me yesterday to know that is what is going to happen to poor Sadie. But she can't be allowed to continue to hurt people.
Its jeans week! Wahoo! For $5 that goes to United Way, we get to wear jeans all week. Better go get them out of the dryer!
Thin - You deserved to have a great time at the party after all the work you two have done to get the boys moved. Good strategy for getting their stuff over to their houses. You've been doing good with food so I'm keeping my fingers for you.
Barb - The new thread looks beautiful! You can do the next too since you find such beautiful graphics. I like your new determination. I found an old Oprah magazine where she revealed her bootcamp. I reread one paragraph about losing weight being a decision. I know I've read that before and I know its the simple truth. Just keep that in mind. Each time you eat something or don't, each time you go to the gym or don't, it is your decision. We're rooting for you!
Leanne - You asked about BalanceLog. It is a calorie and nutrient counting program that you can buy for your computer and PDA. Probably like ediets.com or fitday.com but this loads on your computer instead of being web-based.
Elaine - Welcome home! I hope the session with the trainer went well. Maybe the scale was reflecting some fluid retention from the travel.
Marge - Welcome to the group! I tried to sell some books on half.com and didn't get any response. I might have to sell them as a lot on ebay.
Ruth - I hope you're feeling better soon.
Michelle & 2Cute -
Okay, my brain has gone blank and I better get up and get the clean clothes upstairs so that I have something to wear. Its going to be a cold week; maybe even snow.
I hope you all had a good weekend. Mine was busy, yet strangely unproductive. I do know I did exceptionally BAD where food was concerned. Many, many fattening meals. Probably gained back that one pound of virgin fat! But, my choices, my fault. We ended up at Ryan's Friday night and Country Kitchen Saturday night. I could get a salad or veggies or chicken, no...I ate steak at Ryan's and a skillet breakfast at CK. Stupid.
On Saturday I went to the Middle Eastern and Asian Markets in the next town over...took my best friend, she just never gets out of the house. Oh yes, I forgot, I had Baklava too! We had so much fun. I got my dates and pine nuts for my medieval stuff and got rice noodles for DH, he LOVES those things. Then I took her for an early birthday lunch. We were feeling international, so we went for Thai food. Neither of us had ever had Thai before - and it was WONDERFUL! Definately a contender for favorite new splurge food. I got Pad Thai and she got something HOT with a ginger sauce - I don't remember what it was called - and we shared. I promptly got on-line at home and looked for Thai recipes. Got to learn to make Pad Thai at home, and hopefully cut down the calories a bit.
The rest of Saturday was occupied with grocery shopping and getting my friend's birthday gift. This past summer she'd mentioned to me that she always wanted a bird bath. (She spends a lot of time on the patio.) Of course, they are kind of hard to get in December, but a couple weeks ago I'd looked at Lowe's and found one for $40 and another one I remember was over $60. Well the $60 was out of my price range, but I went back for the $40. It was gone. I was so upset and I asked the older gentleman helping me the price of the other one, the tag was missing. He asked a second man who was evidently in charge, who said "if she wants it give it to her for $25!" I actually hugged him! Then, when checking out, they couldn't find an item number for it, and instead he sold it to me as a planter for $17.50! That time he got a big hug and a kiss on the cheek!!! Talk about a deal! Definately the best buy of the year!
Sunday was a big old nothing day. I managed to get some lights up outside and the tree up and decorated. That's about it! Tonight I'll still need to get the house finished and some laundry done etc., etc.
Marge: Welcome!!! We have a really nice bunch of ladies here and also on the other threads. You've done very well on your own it seems. Keep up the good work! I look forward to getting to know you!
Elaine: My mother was born in Portland, Oregon. I have an aunt in Seattle still, but it's been years since I've seen her. She's pushing 80 now I'd imagine. I really must try to get in touch with her. Anyway, I've never been to Portland, but I have been to Oregon. It's possibly my favorite state, especially the coast. There's just something magical about the pacific northwest. I was born in Northern California, specifically, Mt. Shasta. We took a couple of family vacations to the northwest when I was young and I've never forgotten how beautiful it is.
Barbara: I agree with Terri, you make the most wonderful graphics. I'd love to know how to do that! I especially like your new avatar!
Terri: Sounds like you were busy this weekend. I so admire that you get up to exercise every day, even sick! I'd be in bed refusing to come out with the cover's over my head. Oh wait! I do that every day!
Ruth: GET WELL SOON!
Thin: Glad you had a good time at the party and did so well on food there. As for the seafood alfredo...that's what I wanted Friday when we ended up at Ryan's instead! I keep seeing this Red Lobster commercial where they show the seafood pasta and it makes my mouth water. Maybe if I'd have had that I wouldn't have been so snacky this weekend. Sometimes I'll crave something and if I don't get it I just never seem to get full...I think I just keep eating hoping the craving will go away!
Leanne: Thanks for the insite into Aussie Christmas! It sounds like what I imagine it's like in Florida! Not that I'd know...I'm doomed to a midwestern Christmas forever. I have cousins there though and I remember years ago them coming up for the holiday and being so enthralled with the snow...they'd never seen it before! I think it sounds wonderful to spend Christmas night on the beach under the stars! Of course, right now warm sounds good, period!
2 cute and Michelle Hi!
Well ladies, this took longer than I planned and I'm still behind at work, so I better scoot! "See" you later. Have a happy, healthy OP day everyone!
