Question Amount of loss in first week?

I just started my new calorie restriction, before it was basically a free for all which explains the 254 pounds. Anyways, I'm trying to stay under 2000 cals a day. I'm just wondering what a safe pace for weightloss is for the first week? I've always been a scale addict and so I'm weighing 1st thing in the morning every morning and when I stepped on the scale this morning it said I was down to 250. A 4 pound loss since sunday! I even did it twice to make sure. This can't be safe can it? Should I possibly raise my calorie intake? I'm definetly not complaining about it coming off easily but 4 pounds in a few days just seems a little much.

Well, weight fluctuates a lot. I've lost track of my weight from day to day, I write it in different places and it gets lost.

I started at 290, and I'm at 284.5 now after about 3 weeks. But it's screwy. I went from 290 to 286 the first week. And then to 283.5 the second. But now it's up to 284.5 on the third. I do vary what I eat a lot, and exercise, and my TOM is sporadic so it's hard for me to guess that. Some days I drink a ton of water, some I don't, I eat too much sodium in general because I don't home cook, that I know.

I eat anywhere between 1400 and 2000 calories, tending to average around 1600-1700. Just depends on how hungry I am, what I eat, if I'm depressed or stressed (and how that happens to trigger me in relation to food that day). I'm probably too new to base anything on, though.

No clue why I went up a pound from last week. I suspect that the 283.5 was just on the low side of my weight fluctuation, and the 284.5 is more in the middle. But who knows. I'm hoping to look from the first of one month, to the first of the next, and seeing 4-8 pounds lost.

Edited to add in answer to your question, do you feel hungry? Do you feel like you don't want to eat as much, but need the calories? I'd gauge it off your hunger, and wouldn't worry too much until you see how it goes for a few weeks. I get obsessive myself about if I'm eating too much, or not eating enough. I'm at the point where I've decided, eh, screw it. Looking at my calories for the past 14 days on Fit Day, I've eaten the following amount of calories: 1472, 1593, 1986, 1871, 1738, 1424, 1607, 1559, 1351, 1708, 2054, 1855, 1448, 1639. If I average them (easy to guesstimate on FitDay) it looks like 1500-1600 calories on average. So I guess I'm doing okay. I'll let you know in 3 months.

In your first week, especially if you're making major changes to things like water intake, you do tend to lose alot of water weight (and from what I've seen, it seems like the heavier you are to start with, the more you lose at first...I could be wrong though). I know the first time I lost a significant amount of weight (I was 247 at my highest, about 3 years ago), I lost around 7 lbs the first week. I lost a pound or so the week after, gained a pound the week after, and stopped trying at that point. I just started again (218 at my start this time, and losing about 2 lbs / week right now).

If you're feeling good with what you're doing, I wouldn't panic yet. If you're still losing alot of weight quickly on 2000 cal after a week or two, it might not be a bad idea to check with a doctor to make sure everything is okay to lose at that rate.

Thanks ladies. Actually yesterday I had to force myself to eat. I wasn't feeling hungry but I got that you need to eat something or be sick feeling. I have cut down on how much diet pepsi I'm drinking and have started drinking alot more water so maybe that's it. It just came as a real suprise to me because it is that TOM and I wasn't expecting to lose anything let alone 4 pounds already. Normally right now I would be stuck at one weight and not moving till that TOM was over.

I'm really not doing that much as far as exercise either since I'm still recovering from knee surgery. I managed to get in 20 minutes of a workout with my exercise ball this morning and I make any and every excuse I can to make a trip up and down the stairs. Last night dh and I took the kids for a quick walk but it was only around the block. So as you can see I'm not getting that much exercise in.

Oh well. If it doesn't slow down a bit I'll talk to my doctor about it. Hmmm.... Wondering if it could have something to do with the fact that this is my first cycle since I went off of clomid? I've been on it since June and two rounds of Femara before that.

I don't think losing four pounds in the first week is unsafe. Even in the second and third weeks you may lose in that range. However, if you CONTINUE to lose at that rate I'd suggest evaluating your calorie range.

As you progress, your weight loss will begin to slow but you will likely drop 1-2 pounds each week. Further into your program you'll probably begin averaging 1/2 - 1 pound a week and then you will probably hit a plateau that you'll have to ride out or work through.

I've been losing weight for about 9 months and I still average about a pound a week. It isn't steady though. I'll go three weeks without losing anything and then I'll have a 4 pound loss. Or I'll lose two pounds one week and then nothing for a month.

My point is that our bodies are complicated machines and as long as you feel good and are satisfied then you are likely right on track even if the scale gets a little quirky sometimes.
