Default What vegetarian foods can I have in phase 1?

Ok I love alot of the Morningstar products out there (black bean burgers, mushroom burger, tomato basil burger, corndogs (I am sure these are nto allowed though LOL), breakfast sausage etc...So what ones are ok to have and what are limitations? I think I did see in one of my books I can have one morningstar sausage patty a day but did not see specifics for the burgers. Thanks!

According to The Good Fats Good Carbs Guide you can have the following meat substitutes on P1:

-Black Bean Burger (make sure there's no corn or grain products in it....which would leave out Morningstar)
-TofuPup hotdogs
-Seitan
-Tempeh soy burgers
-Garden Burger's Veggie Burger

You can also have the soy meat crumbles. Morningstar makes a good brand. I've also seen chicken substitutes with P1 ingredinets. Just check the labels and make sure there's no grains in them. Wheat gluten is OK since it's just the protien from wheat.

You could also add about 1/2 C or so of textured vegetable protien to meatballs, soups and stews, etc. for some good protein.

I have a recipe for black bean burgers but it calls for bread crumbs. I think one day I may play around with it to try to make it P1. Maybe soy flour would work instead of bread crumbs.

Hope this helps.

Pear, you have to read the ingredients for each product. I haven't found any Morningstar items that I can have in P1, as most have wheat or corn in them.

You might look around for other brands...one that is more soy oriented rather than wheat oriented would be okay, I would think. You can look at the manufacturer's websites to get nutritional info, including ingredients, then post them here and we can take a look if you are unsure. Just look closely at the ingredient lists, okay?

Yes, you have to read labels, I agree. That's why I made sure to state that in my comment. The products I listed came straight out of TGFGCG. According to Dr. A. wheat proteins like seitan and wheat gluten are OK for all phases. There are more carbs in a spoonfull of Splenda than there are in 3/4 C serving of Morningstar meat substitute so I don't see why that is off limits in P1. There are products that contain very small amounts of what would otherwise be non-OP ingredients that are allowed because of the small amounts. One example would be fat free cool whip. The first or second ingredient is corn syrup yet it's allowed in small amounts even during P1. I guess everyone just has to read the labels and decide for themselves what they will choose. I personally think that a meat substitute is far healthier than corn syrup in any phase.

Pearshape, thanks for the good information! I didn't read that about the wheat glutan...good to know!

I agree...meat substitute is much healthier than corn syrup! However, eating a Morningstar corn dog (as good as they are... ) during Phase 1 would definitely mess you up. So read the labels, people, and if you are confused, bring them here so we can check them out, okay? Sounds like Pearshape might be our Veggie consultant!
