Question Weight and Strength Training???

Ok Chicklets. I need some help.

Does yoga/pilates count as W/S training?

If not, what would be a good & cheap(as in not a gym) compliement to go with running/walking? (Going to start that Prevention Running program)

Would that count?? Or should I do something different???

(I also have Yoga for Dummies and Pilates for Dummies, )

hello! Well I am a fitness instructor and i would say that pilates or yoga would not count as weight or strength training its more flexability although it does (pilates anyway) strengthen your abs. As far as a cheap way to strength train at home I would suggest getting aroung a 8 lb set of dumbbells at walmart (like 10 $$$) and do moves at home you could do bicep curls, shoulder presses.... ect do a google search for upper body moves and then for lower body hold your weights and do squats, lunges and things like that! I hope that helps and good luck!!!

P.S----keep up with the pilates and Yoga they are a great addition to any workout!! (pilates is one thing that has made me see a great improvement in my abs!!!)

Wow! I feel out of shape then. B/c every muscle in my body is hurting from my yoga class. And, I have trouble with some of the poses that makes me hold my body up using a lot of my arms.

Thanks for posting those websites, I am going to check them out. It is difficult to make it to the gym sometimes.

I like to alternate walking some days and on the other days using weights on my pilates ball. Just a thought.

djett, yoga, especially, and some pilates moves, too, can strengthen your muscles. But it doesn't really count as strength training, because it doesn't really strengthen them as much as lifting weights and other exercise will. Does that make sense? I know after I do my 40th downward dog position in an hour class, my arms are killing me! But I think it might have something to do, also, with the fact that you aren't actually moving the muscle (flexing and extending) while bearing weight. Does that make sense? This might be a good question to post in the Exercise forum!

That said, definitely keep up both activities...they help so much with posture, flexibility, core strength, and ab muscle use. There are several videos that can help you do strength training at home. You can use dumbells, resistance bands, or even household items, like 2 liter bottles of soda or big cans. Check out the exercise forum for more info, including tons of video recommendations. I think it's fabulous that you are thinking about this...strength training is essential for good weight loss, I think! The more muscle you build, the more calories you burn (and the better you feel!).

That was my question Laurie.
Is that DVD is put up the link to count as weight training? They say you need a day of rest between exercises.
