Default Just diagnosed Insulin Resistant (Have PCO too!)

Hello ladies. I had a 2hr glucose tolerance test done last week and I got my results today...and gosh darnet I have IR I was dxd with PCO in 1999, now on top of that I have IR. What I would like to know is for those who are IR, what type of eating plans, meds, etc., have helped you lose weight and help with your insulin? I'm an eager beaver trying to learn all I can about this condition. I go for my appt with my endo on Aug 29. I plan to have 100+ questions for her . I want to know all I can and find support and ways to combat this. I want to start a family w/i the next year and I don't want this or PCO to be a hinderence! Thanks in advanced for all help, suggestions, advice and prayers. Oh yeah, i'm doing the south beach diet...do you guys think I should continue? I've heard of an Insulin Resistance diet! all help is welcomed!

Thanks,
Sunkissed

Hi sunkissed I'm sorry you received bad news, but it's good that you actually know what the problem is so you can deal with it. If you are happy with your weight loss progress on the South Beach Diet, you may want to continue it and see how it goes, at least for the next two weeks until your appointment. I've heard good things from people with PCOS/IR that follow South Beach. It if doesn't work, then you might consult your physician for advice on something more agressive. Not everyone needs to take that step, though.

Jennifer 3FC tried the glucophage and other recommended treatments, but eventually quit them as she learned what worked better for her body with diet and exercise. Amy 3FC is also PCOS/IR and also quit the meds because she didn't like the side effects. She eventually lost her weight through gastric bypass. A lot of people find results from increasing their exercise levels. In fact, a major Pennsylvania university study on PCOS suggested exercise was the most important step in treating PCOS.

Good luck

Thanks Suzanne! I think I will continue on SBD until I see my doc on the 29th. If she suggests I try something else, then I will. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get PCO and IR under control. I just really want to lose the weight and try to conceive my 1st child in 2006. I will also continue to do my regular workouts to see if I can lose anymore weight between now and my appt. I've lost 8lbs so far which isn't great but of course it's not bad either. I don't think she will prescribe any diabetic meds. But we'll see when i get there. Thank you again Suzanne. Have a great day!
