Did anyone catch Starved on FX last night? It's satire about people with various eating disorders who belong to an alternative support group based on shame and humiliation to induce accountability. I have to say, it was like driving by a car accident. I was horrified, yet I couldn't seem to turn away. It was funny in a sick, twisted sort of way and I have to admit it was very original. I think I may have to see another episode before I decide if it's truly worth my time or not. So, if anyone saw it, I'd like to hear your take on it as well.
Beverly - I thought the same thing exactly! The scene in the diner with the food scale...THAT had me rolling on the floor!
I understand the creator of the series struggles with an eating disorder. I think the writers did a pretty good job of trying to show the insanity of it all without being sappy. (Although it *was* pretty crass!) And that support group...I wonder if the creator ever went to OA and thought, "Gee, this isn't helping..."
I was also delighted to see that it's three MEN and a woman struggling with eating disorders. It's about time men got some representation in this fight!
Okay...I've watched two. It's over-the-top gross and...Oh, man...Howie and must be sick puppies because we guffaw at that show! Guilty pleasure, that one.
Oh no, has there been another one already?? Bummer, I must have missed it! I must see if I can catch a re-run. So this one was pretty bad, ugh? The sick puppies are the people who actually come up with this stuff, talk about some twisted individuals!!
I saw the first one, and really didn't care for it. I thought it was very crass and, like you said Bev, like watching a train-wreck. The people are just too extreme. Oh well! You win some, you lose some..... at least Survivor starts on Sept. 15!!
As far as "Starved" goes, it's supposed to be extreme -- but I agree they've gone too far with a lot of the dialogue and jokes. It's one thing for Howie and I to talk of crude stuff in our own home in private (not that we'd ever do THAT), but it's kinda disheartening to see it on TV. You're right, it's like a train wreck...And I admit we were rubber-neckin' at it.
Althought when that girl was at the meeting and being a smartbutt to that lady leading the meetings that, "I thought if I weighed my laxatives like I weigh my food...." that part had me rolling. I do agree, it may be a bit extreme for some people, I thought it was fairly good at representing the real way people are with eating disorders, at least the people around me with them are alot similar to the ones that are on that show.
