Thumbs up Random Food Facts

Isn't the internet a great tool for finding information? I thought it'd be a good idea to start up a thread for random food info you might come across while surfing and feel is worthy of sharing with our group.

This one debunks some food myths (gee, I was really hoping that one about your stomach shrinking was true...):

Here's one that doesn't necessarily deal with weight-loss, but tells us great health facts about some foods I'm sure we're eating in our weight-loss plans:

I'm such a geek and I love to learn new things. Thanks for the post Jill. Here's my contribution that I nabbed off of www.snopes.com (excellent site for random facts)

1. You can tell which day a loaf of bread was baked by the color of its plastic twist tag (this may not be universal, but it's true for the supermarket down here)
http://www.snopes.com/food/prepare/breadtag.htm

2. Celery has less calories in it than what is needed to digest it. "Celery has about 6 calories per 8-inch stalk, making it a dieter's staple. Although it's loaded with latent energy, the amount we are capable of extracting from it is negligible thanks to the plant's cellulose composition. Though chewing might feel like a somewhat strenuous activity, it burns about the same amount of energy as watching paint dry. It is the bodily energy devoted to the digestion of the green stalks that exhausts calories"

Woops, Jill, there goes your Taco Bell "lowest grade of beef" claim! It seemed credible!

Hmmm....BUSTED in my own thread! However, I maintain its likely Taco Bell uses "USDA Utility, Cutter and Canner" rather than "USDA Prime, Choice or Select". As for my other claim, the meat DOES come out of a hose, I've seen it! Now I'll have to write to Snopes to find out if Canadian Taco Bell uses Beaver entrails (I heard it from a friend of a friend who knows someone who swears that's true!)

By the way, I've taught MY dog to say "Yo quiero Jilly's skinless grilled chicken breast"

Jill, you honestly cracked me up there.

Just wanted to check in quickly and let you know I'm still alive and well. I'm at my sisters house and eating healthy and getting exersize here is IMPOSSIBLE. So, I think I'm going to just try to do some situps/pushups/jumpingjacks in my room each morning before I emerge and am derailed with a schedule. Also, I'm going to eat 1/2 as much food as I want. (Which will equal out to about what I NEED!) The last few days have gone terribly, and I feel terrible b/c of it. No more!

Sorry that was a little OT, but I only have a couple of minutes online here. Goodnight everyone!
