Default WOW, where do I start?!?!?!

Ok, so I want to start exercising the RIGHT way. Problem is, I don't even know how or where to start!

I will have access to a fitness center in my new apt complex which has about everything, but not until March 1st. I don't want to wait until then! I know I can start walking ( I am severly out of shape, no jogging allowed ) but how do I know when I am doing it productivly.

Is there a way to figure out your target heart rate? How do you know when you are in it? How do you know when you are in the best fat burning range without a monitor? I don't have the money to go buy one, even a cheap one right now. I am sure there is a way to do it without a machine.

I have the serious urge to get moving, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right so I don't get depressed and burned out. Any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

you should be breathing heavily (and in my case sweating like a pig ) but able to carry on a conversation while you are walking to be at a good heart rate and good fat burning zone. just take it slow and find your own pace. you shouldn't be struggling, but it shouldn't be easy either. swing your arms when you walk, it will get your heart rate up and help you keep your pace better. all those heart rate monitors and things are great, but when you are just starting out, you can listen to your body. it will let you know when you need to slow down or pick up the pace.
