Default Seeking a doctor for a diagnosis in Vancouver

Hi!

I'm new to this site. I think I may have PCOS... after having had discussions with a girlfriend in Edmonton who has it, the indicators point to the possibility that I have the syndrome - ie irregular periods for almost 20 years (I'm 32 and got my first period when I was 13... they have never been regular except when I was on the pill), hirsutisim, elevated cholesterol levels (low HDL but high normal LDL), and an almost life long struggle with clinical depression that was only diagnosed 3 years ago.

Anyway, cutting to the chase... I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a GP in the Vancouver area who a) tests/specializes in/treats PCOS and b) is accepting new patients. I am willing to travel as far as Burnaby/New Westminster/N. Delta and/or Surrey if necessary.

I do have a GP that I've seen for most of my life, but I have heard that he will be retiring within the next year or so, and as such, I don't know how willing he'd be to start down this path of investigations with so short a time period left before he retires... I also think I'd be better off finding someone who specializes/is interested in PCOS and who works closer to where I live who can monitor my progress for more than the time that my current doc would be able to spend with me.

Thanks alot for your help!

Kate

I'm sorry that I don't know of any doctors to steer you towards! I would look in your phone book and try to find an endocrinologist and see if they are taking patients. If they aren't, ask them if they know of any that are. Then second choice would be a gynecologist. Endocrinologists are the hormone specialists so they are your best bet for having a doctor that is up on PCOS.

Good luck!!
