I lost four pounds on phase one and have been on phase two for four weeks and I have lost only one pound in phase two.
I do eat one slice of the kraft low fat cheese at most meals and I am wondering if that is my problem.
The other thought I am having is that I just stopped nursing my baby about two weeks ago and maybe my body is still adjusting with that hormone shift. Any ideas.
I am getting really discouraged.
Michelle
Don't get discourged. Your body is probably just adjusting to the hormone changes. Give yourself sometime and you will show a loss. Keep up the good work.
I don't know what to suggest for you, but know that you are not alone. The first week that I was on Phase 2, I gained .2 of a lb. I was very disappointed because I did not attack Pahse 2 aggressively. The first week, I started by adding 1 starch or 1 fruit, but on alternating days and then didn't remember to have it every day. I still gained.
The second week, I had 1 starch the entire week, and, 3 or 4 servings of fruit. I lost 1 lb. that week.
Sooo this week, my third, I have decided to go back to Phase 1. Since I started the Phase 1 again last Friday, I have lost a bit over 2 pounds. I am really thinking that there must be a balance somewhere in there, but be darned if I know what it is...
If you try any changes and they work, do let me know.
Satchel, I forgot to ask you about nursing and being on SBD. Did you check with your dr. before you started? Are there any health concerns for baby? How long did you nurse?
My daughter just had a baby in April and is still nursing. She and her DH are considering starting SBD. I am going to visit in a couple of weeks and she wants me to bring the books so that she can read them.
I'm finishing up my 1st week on Phase II, and I'm experiencing some of the same issues that everyone else is.
I did some reading on the Prevention magazine South Beach board, and it seems that there may be a couple of things going on -
1. When you first go on South Beach, the hormones that are released when you severely limit carbs cause the body to use fat that is holding a lot of water. That's why we lose so much in the first couple of weeks. After a few weeks, most of that easily accessed fat is gone, so that's why staying on Phase I forever doesn't work.
2. When you start adding carbs again, your body tries to replenish a bit of that easily accessed fat.
For me, who has lost only about 1 lb this week, that means that I actually have lost about 3 lbs a week for the last three weeks, and even though I have a lot to lose, I will only be losing 1-2 lbs a week (hopefully for the next year or so) .
The big difference is that I am not experiencing the huge cravings that I did before Phase I. Eating healthy is rather comfortable. Tonight will be salmon - and tomorrow, I saw this recipe in a low carb cookbook for grapefruit/beef salad.... I do believe I'm getting interested in healthy food. Anything to stay away from pasta!
Yes. I agree with that. I do not have cravings, either. Evenings are generally my worst time for snacking, I usually don't have the desire to snack. If I do, then I will go to the fridge for a piece of cheese, or yogurt, or something like that.
Satchel, great ideas in here. Give it time to see if it might be your hormones. I've heard that breast feeding can help you lose weight...perhaps whatever controls that effect is now weaning, so your body is adjusting the weight? Not sure if that made sense, but give it time to see.
In the meantime, check your cheese to ensure that there is not more than 6g of fat per ounce (1 1/2 slices of processed cheese).
Satchel, hang in there. I think the fact that you stopped nursing may have a big effect, hormones, etc. I know I was losing weight when I was nursing (a decade ago!) and when I stopped, the weight loss slowed down. One thing did occur to me...when you were nursing were you drinking extra water and are you still drinking plenty of water? I know I drank a lot of extra water when I was nursing and continued to drink a lot but I didn't feel I needed it like I did when I was nursing. Just a thought.
I lost 8 lbs. on Phase 1 and gained a pound each week I was on Phase 2
So now I only lost 5 lbs. during the 5 weeks I was on SBD. I know it's my own fault and I have to be more diligent about some things I do. I may try to follow Phase 1 again. Maybe you want to write down exactly what you eat and post it here and maybe somebody can give you insight but you may want to wait and see what's happening with your body. Let us know and say hi to baby
Thanks for the input. I am going to keep trying. I think my body is just adjusting to hormone/diet changes.
To sweet tooth. I would have your daughter ask her doctor about nursing and SBD if she is still nursing the baby pretty frequently. Maybe she could start on Phase 2 til the baby is mostly eating solid food. I started South Beach after my baby turned one year when most of his nutrition was already coming from whole milk and three meals a day plus snacks of solid food. I was only nursing him in the morning when he first woke up and at night right before he went to bed more to comfort him than for nutrition. But he is totally weaned now.
