Just because you have diabetes in your family doesn't deliver a death sentence to you. If you maintain a healthy weight and life a healthy lifestyle (sensible diet AND adequate rest and exercise) you can beat the tendency that has been handed down through your genes.
My father was diabetic and all his brothers and sisters (11) are or were diabetic. When I was overweight (272 at 6' tall) is was pre diabetic. My doctor informed me in March, though, that that is no longer the case. He says I am very healthy.
I still watch my sugar, although I have not cut it out completely.
The plan I followed was pretty easy and I had few cravings. I lost a lot of weight and got really healthy, including reversing my high blood pressure.
You're in the right place to get started.
Good luck.
