Default Newbie questions

I'm sorry if the answer to these questions are obvious, maybe I'm making this harder than it really is! Salad dressings, what do you use? I simply cannot do vinegar and oil, any kind of oil, I've tried and I gag. I have gotten really good at using only a tiny amount of something (low fat, fat free, whatever) during all my time on WW, but I need something to dress my salad. I'm in Phase 1. Also, condiments. Would anyone have a recipe for a sauce I could whip up to use with grilled chicken or fish? Old habits die hard and I'm used to having Heinz 57 or ketchup or bbq sauce or something. One last question, black eyed peas. Okay on Phase 1, avoid until 2, or longer, or are they okay? I know they contain some protein but I had it in my head that they were starchy, like those green peas I love so much! Thanks in advance!

Hi, Storylady, love your avatar!

Black eyed peas are fine. 1/2 cup a day of beans is allowed, even in Phase1. I found this in the Good Fats, Good Carbs Guide (GFGCG). It's a great reference!

For dressings, you can use anything that fits these requirements:
  • 3 grams of sugar or less (3, 2, 1, or 0 is okay)
  • Nothing in the ingredient list that says "hydrogenated"

Easy! I love Pfeiffer Ranch and Bleu Cheese, there's a refridgerated Light Bleu Cheese (Marzettis?) that I like too. Kraft's Spicy Ranch (I think it's Kraft) has 3 grams, so is okay. I love Annie's Natural's Tuscan dressing. Just go through the dressing aisle and go to town. You can also make your own ranch at home with Hidden Valley packets, a bit of mayo and a bit of buttermilk. Yummy!

You can use Sugar Free (SF) ketchup with your fish if you want. You can make it, using the recipe in the SBD cookbook (which I highly recommend), or you can buy it. There is an Atkins version and a Heinz version, too. You can make your own tartar sauce using mayo (you can use the full fat version, just stay with 1 Tbsp or less with your meal), dill pickles (no sweet relish), etc. You can use Worcestershire in Phase 2 as long as it's limited quantities. There are a whole bunch of condoments in the cookbook--check them out! What about having fish with salsa?

Hope that helps!

Laurie, thanks so much. I did see the Heinz ketchup in the store today but I wasn't sure so I passed. I looked at salad dressings and thought some of them would work, but wasn't sure, thanks for the guidelines. I'll also look for that Good Fats/Carbs companion. I'm on day 3 and I have to say, for a lifelong sweet-aholic, this is amazingly easy. I swore for months, heck years, that I could not give up sweets. But look at me, I'm doin it!! Thanks again!

I just wanted to chime in and say that the Heinz ketchup is REALLY good! I've missed ketchup on scrambled eggs and tried the Atkins stuff (when I was on Atkins). I didn't care too much for that. I've just recently discovered the Heinz stuff and love it! The ingredients seem to be OK and I haven't noticed any drop in weight loss. I highly recommend it!

Good going, Storylady! Isn't it amazing (and very power-filling) to know that you can do this? I feel the same way...I never thought I could make it without bread and sweets!

Kissyjoy, did you find the Heinz version was less sweet? I tried Atkins ketch-a-tomato last night and found it had way too much sweetener in it.

Beachgal-I thought the Atkins version tasted too fake. I definitely tasted the Splenda in it. The Heinz version is so close to the real thing for me that I don't even think my husband would be able to tell the difference (and he's a ketchup fiend)! I didn't really notice it being too sweet although I have a huge sweet tooth! I've only really eaten it on scrambled eggs because I haven't found another need for it yet but I'm sure it would taste just as good on anything!

Cool! Thanks, Kissyjoy! I love sweets, too, but too much Splenda just tastes weird to me...so the Heinz version sounds more palatable. I don't eat much ketchup, and my husband hates the taste of any artificial sweetener, so I think I'm going to be the only one eating it. Guess I better get one that I like!
