I'm trying to stick under 1500 calories a day which isn't exactly dramatic and at first it was really pretty easy and I was normally under but recently I've been eating closer to 1700 and still feeling hungry. Has anyone got any tips on what to eat that fills you up? I already drink loads of water and it doesn't seem to help I can't afford to be hungry all the time when I'm trying to concentrate on study!
Are you eating plenty of fruit Dill? I don't like fruit eat the odd banana and apple and thats it I don't like weetabix very much but when i had a couple for breakfast one morning i was'nt even hungry at lunchtime so cereal may help i also find that protein helps too, a boiled egg or some ham. let us know what you're eating at the mo'
I'd allow yourself some extra cals for something filling for the days you feel hungrier better that than binge (as I would) I drink water, eat fruit and have baked potato at night most days. I can not stand being hungry.
I am a terrible snacker! Some days i will snack on celery and low fat philidelphia and some days i take a big bowl of cut up fruit and snack on that through the day...i would say if your feeling hungry then your body needs food...its just how you fill up thats the trick!
I'd be careful of too much fruit. ALthough it is good for you it ain't half calorific nd you could be guzzing too much. Obviously you need some but if you can stand nibbling raw veg as much as you can fruit then sticks of carrots in the fridge would be a good idea. Anyway, I never satisfied a hunger pang with an apple - quite the opposite in fact!
I have bowls of carrot batons and cut up pieces of apple and pear in the fridge ready for snacking moments.
On the subject of things to eat. Does anyone know of a really low fat margarine style thread thats vegetarian?
Flora diet isnt veggie and I tried the tescos own equivalent that is and when I got it home it was curdled so I dont fancy that again.
I've finally got some pounds off ( now weighing 175, no big deal but I feel Proud!!) and the interesting fact on this is that Im not exactly following a diet. I just try to eat strawberries or celery and spinach salad (with low-cal dressing of course) between meals everyday. AND I manage to keep veggie soup always in the fridge (just in case) The above have really helped me on losing weight, maybe I still get hungry, but I don't ingest the same bunch of calories as before.
Oh and, just in case, I always have chewing gum with me for those times when I'm not at home and feel really hungry (not a very healthy way of beating hunger anyway). Btw, drinking hot tea or coffe really helps.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Laura, you've done pretty well to lose 5lb in 2 weeks Did you notice I posted you back on the newbie column with my spurious views on students?

Well done having low cal snacks handy does work. I snack on fruit and babybels.
I eat vegetables when my stomach permits it. Especially in the afternoons and evenings. Lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes. Cauliflower is also very low-cal and, when boiled, is very nice warm food. You can eat a whole huge plate of it and it takes up less than 50 cals.
Try to drink lots of water. It not only postpones hunger by filling your stomach, it also prevents possible dehydration when you diet seriously. I think it's good to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day. Taking water between bites of food should also help. Maybe make a pause during the meal (after taking the first few bites), write down the food in the food diary, get yourself a cup of water, then go back finish the food. It usually takes the stomach 20 mins to fill satiated, so I try to interchange eating with other activities at chow time. Satiation feeling usually comes overdue, so one is tempted to eat beyond being full.
Apples are great (think of all the vitamins). For me, when I eat in the evenings, I tend to gain back, so I try to lighten up my suppers and afternoon snacks, putting off the heavy carb stuff for the mornings and lunches. If you want something sugary or sweet, orange juice or apple juice can do the trick, or ice tea with lemon. I am not a big one on juice, though.
Somebody posted about chewing gum. I am not sure if it does the trick, though. Personally, chewing gum makes me hungrier. I think the idea is that it simulates food for your stomach, so your stomach acids and enzymes begin accumulating, and I feel hungrier.
I know that if you brush your teeth, and the taste of tooth paste remains in the mouth, it's a definite end of the meal for me because I can't combine food with mint tooth paste. On the other hand, the chewing gum leaves an aftertaste in the mouth sometimes, and maybe it's just me, but I don't like it. Although I know some people who chew gum a lot, so maybe it helps, depends on the person I guess.
