Default Cous cous question

I am just starting phase two, and I want to think about reintroducing some grains in to my diet. I particularly like couscous. Does anyone know the GI of it (I know it is not a horror food like white rice), and further, what are your experiences of the level of cravings which cous cous trips off. I feel a bit worried to have some in case it should lead me to chocolate gorging mode.

Hi Clovey,

I bought couscous on Saturday and have been afraid to cook it! I love it, and am worried that after not having anything like it, I am going to eat the whole pan.

I noticed one day of the meal plan in the book (sorry I don't have it with me) when Dr.A lists it as a side dish, and he has a couple of recipes where it is used with chicken for a salad. But I am not sure if I am ready. We could pick a day and delve in together!!!

I hope someone has some experience with this and will post soon....

The Good CArb, Good Fat Guide says it should be "limited". I think the whole wheat cous cous would be OK. However, the GI for cous cous(65) is higher than that of bulgar(48) or brown rice(55) so be very careful!

Hmm. Bulgar is very similar is it not? I have never had that. Yes, maybe we should try it at the same time dynagrrl! I am going to investigate bulgar though, I am sure the health food shop sells it.

I have been making a sort of virgin tabouli through phase one (cucumber and lemon juice and spring onion and a few chopped tomatos. and loads of chopped parsley). It is good. I always feel healthy when I eat parsley.

I will look into bulgar, too. It's funny that the GI for bulgar and brown rice would be lower, but he has several recipes with couscous, and none that I can recall for rice. I wonder if it's because rice is easier to overeat? I find it less filling, all in all.

Interesting...I'll let you know what I found out in the bulgar wheat world.

In the UK version of the South Beach book in the lemon chicken cous cous recipe he suggests using a packet mix 'such as Waitrose Garlic and Coriander cous cous mix'.

Waitrose mixes are stuffed FULL of hydrogenated vegetable oil. I have the tomato and onion one and the raisin and sunflower seed one (both cous cous mixes in the same range) and they have a ton of it. I dont have the garlic and coriander one to check, so maybe it is free of the bad fat. But 'such as' suggests he is endorsing the range.

JOIN THE CAMPAIGN TO GET DR AGATSTON A PARTNER WITH ATTENTION TO DETAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BECAUSE HE MAY HAVE SOME NICE DIET IDEAS BUT HE NEEDS SOMEONE TO DO THE SHARPENING UP FOR HIM

Sorry about the shouting. But if he wants Atkins' crown he needs to take some responsibility for being consistant.

Grrrrrr.

Not that I am a very consistent person myself. But I have not written an instruction manual for people's nutritional lifestyles and am not coining it in on the back of people's struggles with their food.

Grrrrrrr.

OK, so I am going to Waitrose later to check the garlic and coriander cous cous to see how long I get to stay up here on the moral high ground. But the cous cous is not the thing. Edit Edit Edit. How difficult is it to proof read a book and think about it's consistency? Clarify terms? Or at least be clear about the unclear bits eg 'I know I say caffein is fine in the morning, and then say drink decaffeinated but that is because I recommend giving up caffein but would not want to do it myself' Or whatever.

Grrrrrrr.

Here endeth the rant. For now.

I need to lay off the caffein. My blood pressure has shot through the roof typing the above self righteous rant. I had to go back and edit it twice because of mistakes and inaccuracies....

But I am not talking about ME I am talking about YOU Arthur A. MD.

Um....could we consider this flaming? Quite a rant, Clovey. Are you still going to stick to SBD?

And yes, I am definitely sticking with SBD. It is a work of pure genius, having got me to lose over 12 lbs so far and still counting. Yeah, I'll stick with it.

HAH! Watching your rant and thought process has given me quite the laugh this morning, Clovey. Because I am prone to the same type of rant. Mine generally go that way, too.

i.e.: hmm I might be mad and you know what I THINK I AM !!! RANT RANT RANT!!! and I'm sorry but it's the truth and RAAAAAAANT!! Well. Okay. Maybe I'm ranting BUT STILL. Okay. I need to calm down. Hi there. How's the weather?

Now that I see it typed out, I think perhaps you'll all think I'm crazy, but I'm very much the "frustrated outburst then calm down" type. Okay. I need less caffeine myself. La la la...

But if I were Dr. A, I'd be watching my step!
