Default Bread and when to eat Carbs (P2)

Hi guys,

I am starting phase 2 and have some questions...

What kind of bread have y'all found that you like? Does anyone eat that Ezekiel bread? It seems to have no added sugar and stuff. I stood at the grocery store for hours trying to figure it out!

What have people found about eating re-introduced carbs for dinner? Is it best to eat them early? For example, the book has the couscous salad for lunch, but I would rather have that for dinner, but is it best to get the carbs out of the way early in the day?

Thanks again! I really like the flexibility of this diet, and I really feel like I am making some positive changes. I do sometimes wish I could eat "normal" again, but I realize that eating McDonald's three days a week while common, surely isn't NORMAL for my body!!! Work on the mental. That's my new motto.

And goooo Canada! The O.C. is new tonight!!!

Sorry, Jenn... I was hoping someone could answer this for you.
We usually buy flax bread. I've found a few low-carb breads, but I can't remember the brands. The flax bread is very satisfying, though. AND good for you.

I'm not sure about when to eat the carbs. I know it's not a good idea to have the fruit first thing in the morning. Usually on Phase II I have the oatmeal, and it really fills me up for the morning.

Hi Ellis,

Thanks for posting, I was like, someone has to be eating bread!!! So you eat flax seed bread, I used to eat that pre-SBD. I will just keep doing that, I guess. I find the food choices are so different here in Canada, the Americans have lots more selection, it seems!

Really, no fruit in the morning? Dr. A has it first thing on some of his menus, doesn't he? He has smoothies for breakfast in P2, I think. Well, I like the fruit for breakfast because I find it very filling, I sail through the morning and can't believe it's lunchtime. I am allergic to oatmeal and sick of eggs, so I am trying to hit the balance for breakfast. But the apple and peanut butter really sees me through.

Thanks again...I will try the flax bread next week.

I know... it's weird. Some of the breakfasts call for fruit, and yet in the little Prevention handbook, he suggests NOT eating it in the morning because it can kick-start your carb cravings.
This morning I had chili for breakfast.

Dr. A shoulda had a better editor!
I have found so many confusing discrepancies in the book...but I just try to follow the best I can!

Agreed. His editor must have been hyperlexic or something...

It stands to reason that a higher GI fruit would jump some cravings, but something like an apple or more fibrous fruit, along with fiber and some good fat seems to me like it would be ok... just my 2 cents.

I can't WAIT until I don't have to have eggs every morning!

Yeah, I am going along with whatever works for me. If I eat the apple for breakfast, I seem okay, so I am just going with that. Plus, it has helped me stay regular. So now I am beginning and ending the day with fruit.

I think it's both that he needed a better editor, AND that it's a diet that is always changing. The more you learn, the more the diet is apt to change!!! So it's a good thing, if not frustrating.

Ellis, do you have the link for the prevention article?

Thanks guys, I can't tell you how great your support is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dynagrrl, I actually found the information in a little "handbook" in the pharmacy. It's called, ummm... Weight Loss South Beach Diet. It's a little magazine-type book put out by Prevention magazine. $3.99 for you American gals.
Good point... it IS a fairly new diet, so it's bound to change.

Chrystal, why don't you have something different for breakfast? Like the turkey roll-ups or... leftover chili!

Hi,

I sure hope we can have fruit first thing in the morning. I started putting apple in my oatmeal to add some variety especially since we can't have raisins. Sure miss my raisins Also, where do I find flax bread. I know this sounds dumb but is it actually called flax bread

Rose, you can have your fruit in the morning if you want to.
Yes, it's called flax bread. Ummm... it SHOULD be available in a larger grocery store. If you can't find it, you may need to try a health food store.
