I can't help with the pregnant part, but I do know a lady on the low carb board that released more follicles (is that the right terminology?) after she was doing low carb.

Have you tried Glucophage XR? That might help. It was MUCH easier on my stomach than the regular. Also, eat it with a non carby meal, that helped with me.

My endo recommended that I be on a low or good carb diet.

Low carb being Atkins, Protein Power, etc. Good carb being Sugar Busters, South Beach, etc. Being on a carb restricted diet helped reduce my PCOS symptoms tremendously!

Good luck!

Welcome Lexidana!

Glad you are here with us! You've found a great support system here with all of us "cysters" as Jennfier calls us hheehe...

Well, when I was trying to get pregnant, the DR. put me on Clomid. Didn't do squat for me. What would of helped but I refused to do at the time was for him to go in and cauterize my ovaries (pop holes in the ovary and cauterize the hole so it stays open) so the eggs could actually exit instead of staying stuck in there and causing more problems. I was freaked out by this..but alas, when I had my hysterectomy in June 2003, my DR. did this anyhow because my poor ovaries were just full of cysts, junk, etc. Might be an option. What I did was I checked out some library books on PCOS, I researched the PCOS member site, just alot of research in general. Heck I am still doing research on this disease. One can not never have enough info to srpead to the rest of the girls!!!

As for Glucophage, I felt really weird the first week or so, but then all of the symptoms disappeared and now I feel great! I lost 40 pounds too so far!!! THAT makes it worth it in itself. I agree with Jennifer on the low carb stuff too. That helped me tremendously. I also cut out fast foods, fried foods, most of my sugars, basically anything thats "junky". I do allow myself a treat now and then but I just control it. I don't want to gain that 40 pounds back. No no no no!!

Feel free to post back, browse around the forum, chime in, etc. Glad you're here!!!

You really have to use your own judgement, I have pcos and I would never go on a diet that I have to eat a living being (which is my personal thing there) and my doctor said there really isn't enough evidence proving to him that a low carb diet is the right way for everyone. I stopped using as many dairy products and stopped eating the junkfood, started walking every day and I have lost fifty pounds. So you have to go with whats comfortable, if you don't want to eat a ton of dead animal, then don't. However if you like meat and don't like bread (I adore bread but switched to whole grains and less of it) or think you can do without it then low carb may be for you. So what I guess I'm trying to say here is do the research cuz you have to decide what your comfortable with. Ok I'm going away now, just had to throw in my five cents (inflation and all) hehehe

I have PCOS and have had two successful pregnancies and two losses. I was offered Clomid and decided not to try it. I tried to naturally regulate my hormone levels through lower carb diet and daily exercise. It worked for me - but I know, every body is different. Good luck to you!

Hi there:

Which Glucophage are you doing? Are you taking it with food? Nausea and other side effects tend to go away after you body has acclimated to taking it. Which one are you taking -- plain or extended release version? If the side effects have not settled down, ask your doc about changing to the "other" form.

For me I didn't like the plain but handled the XR just fine. I was taking 2000 mg of Glucophage XR for about a year before we conceived. I was actually considering adding Clomid to the mix but ended up not needing it. I'm expecting within 2-4 weeks. Sometimes it just takes time for the Glucophage to work and to get the timing for sex right. Even couples with no fertility hurdles have only a 25% chance of getting pregnant any given cycle.

On the diet front -- Colette Harris has written _The PCOS Diet Book_ which might be helpful. I saw a dietitian and did 50% carb, 20% protein, and then 30% fat while TTC. When I got pregnant I wasn't as good about tracking my diet because of the morning sickness and stuff.

In 3rd trimester of pregnancy when I had a little trouble with the GTT's and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Now I do 44% carb, 23% protein and 33% fat. Not a huge change from what I did TTC, but my blood sugar levels are better and I do not have to take insulin or anything.

HTH!
