Default Veganism and B12 supplements

Hi, I support the vegan cause and tried following a vegan diet for about two weeks. However I am on metformin for high blood sugar which is associated with a drop in B12 levels. My doc never mentioned this or checked my B12. What supplements do you vegans take? Have any of you had issues with B12? When I found out metformin lowers B12 I stopped the vegan diet even though I had a vitamin with B12 in it because I figured I was more likely to absorb B12 from animal products than from a pill. Maybe I just don't trust medicine enough? I don't want to contribute to the atrocious treatment of animals as commodities but I don't want to sacrifice my own health for them. #guiltymeateater

And while studying chemistry, I came across this https://edubirdie.com/docs/virtual-h...zmo-answer-key article that clarifies some things. It can be a lifesaver for students. Your concerns are totally valid, and it’s great that you’re looking into the health implications of both your diet and medications. Metformin can indeed lower B12 levels over time, so it’s important to monitor that, especially if you’re trying a vegan diet. Many vegans take a B12 supplement, as it’s one of the few nutrients not readily available in plant-based foods. Methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin are common forms of B12 in supplements, and they’re generally well-absorbed, even for people on metformin.
