Default Conquer the mid-summer malaise: August 2021 Check-in & Accountability Thread

Happy August, everyone! All are to the August 2021 daily weigh-in/check-in. Know that on this thread you will find support, encouragement, and endless kindness.

Here you can:
~track your weight daily, weekly or however you'd like ... but do check in
~keep track of what you eat or didn't eat
~keep track of your water intake or lack of
~keep track of your exercise/other goals
~vent, rant ... express yourself or just chit-chat

August is a long hot month where we often find ourselves mentally in two different spaces, anticipating the fall season and making the most of what is left of summer. The long days, heat and busyness that summer brings often leads to less focus and being more lax in our attitudes and habits. Whether this summer has been one of progress and success, yet you feel your energy waning, or one of struggle and challenges and in need of a fresh start, let's alter our perspective and view August as a mid-summer recharge in our efforts. Maybe you have your eye on fall. That's great but what do you need to be doing now to enter the fall season where you want to be? Maybe you're wishing for a summer do-over. While we can't bring back days and weeks already gone, there is still plenty of time to rethink our choices and set new goals so by the time summer ends we can still feel a sense of accomplishment.

All our welcome to our monthly neighborhood block party so welcome back to the regulars. If you're a lurker please make yourself known and join us! We'd love to have you here!

Good luck and may our August efforts be rewarded well.

Hello everyone, hope this post finds u well and happy!
Quickly checking in. Had a super July and looking forward to an even better August! Huckleberries are ripe so u know I'm busy. Its been so hot they are almost two weeks early. Peaches are about 10 days earlier as well! I've been sleeping at the river and in the woods. I haven't slept in my bed in weeks. New gf and nightlife has been so much fun. I really am having a wonderful time!
Got on the scale, first time in forever. 272.0 not bad because I haven't been planning and preparing. I ate taco bell and McDonald's last week. It tasted ok, but was a little disappointing. Got a new bbq and look forward to making my food again. Feeling pretty fit, hiking and swimming. Sounds crazy, but I think I'm closer to skinny then fat.. Who would have thought? So my goal is to keep it rolling this month. Concentrate on hydration and psychological hurdles. Maybe set a goal of 2lbs this month. Anything under 270 would be unbelievable. Fantasy football draft next month. It will be two years. Two years of better eating. 2.5 years no nicotine! Yay me! Straight bad ***!
Alright, I love you guys!

Hey fam! I hope everyone is doing well...it's been quiet here lately. I am still plugging away with the slow weight loss. Slow on purpose basically...I am eating at the higher end of the calorie range on most days (closer to 1900 than 1600). It's been close to a year that I started trying to lose weight this time. I was 264 and now am 205.6. My August goal is 1.6 to make it 60 pounds! I have lost large amounts of weight like this in the past (but more like 50 pounds) but very fast as in 6 months or less. It always came back as fast as I lost it since I would lose it and then stop eating so low calorie wise and it would rebound. I am trying to be more sane about it so it will last this time!
Curvy Thanks for the compliment! This avatar was the mother's day picture taken at church this year with my daughter.

VickieLou You are doing great!
William 272? Woo hoo!! Two years of no nicotine and eating better? It's amazing how our bodies truly do want us to be healthy. It responds to how we treat it. Just reading what you wrote I can see how your life is so happy. A new girlfriend, you are getting out and living life and loving life! I know you will inspire others to do the same.

Hi...I would like to join this thread if I can. I was going to another website and something happened and it seems to no longer be available. I'm used to weighing everyday. I fluctuate quite a bit due to retaining water which I am working on. A little bit about me. I am 56 (feel like 80). My largest weight was 274. I started trying to lose weight in earnest this go around at 268.8. I am current 246.1 (down -22.7 lbs). My start weight was in the Obese 3 category and I am currently in the Obese 2 category. Can't wait to get lower. The first month or two, the weight came off quick. Then I hit a 5 week stretch of no change. Now I think I'm starting to go down again. It's been a struggle even though I have been doing well. Money is scarce so I'm mainly going for calories and quality when I can. for exercise, I do quite a bit of yard work and walking so it's mainly just cardio. I'm flabby. I need to do some strength exercise, but have a lot of allergies and have no energy. Things have got to get better.

Hello there! I hope all are well. This year has been a whirlwind so far and I’m checking in here for the first time since February with a 15 lb gain. My goals for the month are as follows:

- Walk outside with Loki for at least thirty minutes, most days of the week
- Hot yoga 2+ times per week
- Hydrate hydrate hydrate! (Aka drink at least 3.5 L)
- Minimize take away—prep and cook all meals at home unless out of town or having a date night
- Weigh, measure, and track all calories consumed, keeping to calculated macros

You all are wonderful and I always feel more accountable when I’m checking in here, so I thank you all very much!

Best of luck this month, everyone!

Welcome back RunningRedHead! I also seem to do better when I check in here as well. It really is like a mini support group-cheering squad! LOL

Welcome whispers65 ! You are similar to me. I am 53, my recent highest was 264 last summer also at 5'8. I have lost weight numerous times over the years and this time I am being more sane about it. I am counting calories and keeping them at or below 1900. I try not to go lower than 1500 or 1600 so my metabolism isn't affected. Congrats on your weight already lost! It's great when you can start seeing it in the mirror. Keep checking in, it seems to help!

Thanks. I'm trying to see what I can do for the long haul. I've lost weight for periods before but once I got to a certain level then I stopped, well short my goal. This time it has to be different. I don't go to low on calories either. I like weighing in every day. It helps.

Loganandlivsmom: Thanks! It really is—I’ve become a little lax with myself (eyeballing portions and thinking I have a handle on it). Whenever I go back to being strict with it, it’s an eye-opening experience when I realize I can’t actually eyeball proper portions. Now to figure out why I stop measuring

Whispers65 Hi there! It looks like you’re off to a fantastic start for the month. Way to go!

Thank you for the warm welcome! 1) Fasting - I do not. I've always tended toward low blood sugar so have pretty much done the three meals, three snacks thing. Now, it's more like 3 spaced meals, no snacks in between unless I have a blood sugar drop. I've had it before where I eat and then go for a walk and it drops into the 50's and I struggle to make it back home. These days are better. Both low and high has run in our family. 2) Exercise - I pretty much walk, up to about 3 miles a day here and there. I don't count steps to the kitchen lol. when I say I walked a mile, I actually went outside and walked a mile. Today was harder. I was only able to walk 1/2 mile. The air quality was bad (this afternoon it was like 80 poor quality. It's usually around 40 moderate) and I have bad allergies. Outside doesn't like me at all, but I have no space in my little room either. I live with my sister and dad. I take care of my dad. I do all of the yard work. We live in an old decrepit house on a corner lot which means it's basically the size of 2 yards. I do the mowing, weed eating, and edging, trimming the trees and so forth. It's really sounds way more glamorous than it is. Mostly, it's me huffing and puffing, feeling like I'm going to pass out on days like today with 100+ temps, high humidity and sucky air quality. I pace myself and do a little at a time. As long as the city and the neighbors don't complain, I feel like I did good. Hopefully as I lose more weight, I'll have more stamina. 3) Work? Hmmmm...maybe forced retirement with no money? lol. I worked for a company for 34 years and they outsourced our office overseas. They laid off quite a few locations at that time, almost all of the IT department. I don't miss it though. They gave me a six month stay bonus to train my replacements. during that 6 months and the preceding 3 months, 5 people that I was close to died. It was a hard time. I worked 60-80 hours a week. I was working 60 hours regularly anyway, but this was bad. I even worked on days with funerals. I lost about 600 hours of PTO. I don't miss it. I stay in touch with a few friends from there still. These days I take care of my dad. I do all of the errands for my sister, take care of the animals, and do the yard work and so forth. Far different than the IT stuff I use to do. I'd never envision it would turn out this way. But it is what it is.

My current goal is to trim down to prepare for what is next lol. I am around 243. The last time I was this weight was about 2 years ago. I was at 238 four years ago, and anything under that I haven't been down in probably a decade or more. So it's starting to get exciting.

Sorry for the long winded post. I usually lurk and don't talk much. In public, I'm usually quiet, soft spoken (hence the name whispers), and pretty much invisible from what people tell me lol. But these days, I can be open also.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Hopefully the formatting will stay decent. This will give you an idea how it is has been going for me. I lost really fast at first and then boom I hit the skids for about 5 weeks. I didn't go off my diet. I exercised and maintained my diet the entire time. I think what happens though is that I was really losing weight but my body replaced it with water and hung onto for a while and then boom it drops the excess. That seems to be how it is working. I'd like to lose consistently, but it doesn't seem to happen.
