Default What to snack on???

Hi Everyone,

I had my RNY on June 10th and so far am down 63 pounds. I've done fine all along until recently. For some reason I've been hungry lately and really wanting to snack. It's normally during the day that I want to snack and I'm sure it's because I'm at work and not able to get up and walk around. I've been snacking on fruits and the worst I've done so far have been Cheese Nips. What do you do to beat the urge to snack and if you snack what have you found to be the best snacks to indulge in?

Thank you!
Chris

oh chris. there IS no easy answer to that question. the obvious one is, of course, that grazing will stall or reverse your weight loss. BUT it's all much more complicated than that.

first.. what are your protein goals and are you hitting them? then, what are you SUPPOSED to be eating and are you doing it?

then, are you HUNGRY or MUNCHY???? HUNGRY or giving in to some emotion [boredom, irritability, whatever] or stress?

do these urges come about 3 hours after you eat? you might be hungry. i eat about 6 times a day. small amounts, but fairly often. some people do well with three meals [and at 3 months, i doubt that you can hold enough food to manage only three meals without a couple of snack meals!!!]

if you're HUNGRY then eat something, and fruit is not a good choice., too much sugar and it'll make you hungrier faster. if you MUST eat some fruit, eat it with some protein, like cheese or cottage cheese or whatever.

EAT PROTEIN. SNACK ON PROTEIN. have a protein shake.

if you're NOT HUNGRY, then find a different way to cope. it's not easy. but we can't afford to give in to all the emotional cues to eat. that's a sure way to destroy the surgery.

but bottom line, chris, you must be doing something right with that fabulous weight loss!!!!

Lately its been eating to eat. Boredom and Stress. I'm usually not hungry and I make sure that I get some kind of protein in at every meal but lately around 3 I'm ready to snack on something. I'm not hungry but have a definite urge to eat. I haven't been drinking the protein shakes lately ( I just don't like them!!)

OOHHH as I'm typing this I'm realizing all the mistakes I've been making lately..... I do need to start drinking my proteing shakes and I haven't been getting in the exercise that I was, I'm sure that would help. Thanks for listening and responding so quickly, sitting here typing this is really opening my eyes as to why I've been snacking.

Thank you!!!!

snacking's not necessarily a bad thing [she says as she finishes up her salad that she was too full to eat at lunch!!!!]. it's the issue of CONTROL and knowing what you're doing. and doing what you're supposed to.

i don't know that anyone LOVES the protein shakes. the best i've ever managed is 'not too bad, drinkable without too much gaggiing or anguish']. i've said that i like the nectars, and they're in the 'not too bad' category. would i go out and drink it if i didn't have to???? NO WAY!!!!!!

but from the sound of it, i'd suggest a protein based snack at around 3 pm. i think you're hungry!!!! there may very well be some stress/boredom thing going on as well, but MANY folks get HUNGRY at around 3 pm!!!!

just don't head for the carbs.. cheese. yogurt. deli roll ups. a little chili. soy nuts. protein shake.

After I posted and received your response I realized that I was eating to eat and while trying to make "better" choices in my snack foods, I was still eating to eat and not out of hunger. I was really shooting myself in the foot. A friend of mine had RNY a little more then a year ago and I was starting to eat the things that she ate, not the things that I know I should be eating. I stopped this morning at the WaWa and got myself some lowfat cottage cheese and a couple of hard boiled eggs. I'm back on the right track thanks to you!!

glad the light bulb went off, but it's all due to you, not me... all i did was ask a few questions, and you were honest with yourself about your answers!!!!

that's all it takes!!!!

by the way, you don't have to suffer with just plain cottage cheese and hard boiled eggs... dress it up!!! add seasonings to the CC - some finely shredded veggies like carrots celery onion and some chopped tomato. or a small spoonful of SF preserves. and i don't much care for HB eggs, but i LOVE deviled eggs. either plain or dressed up.

Thanks Jiff, that's a great idea! I really like CC with some FF Ritz Crackers or to just mix a little Splenda in it. The HB eggs are just incase of emergency!!! They're not my favorite either!
