Default Who not what

I will be 47 next month, I have steadily gained weight over the last 5 or so years to the point I am currently hovering at 360ish. I say ish because I will lose a few and gain it back. My doctor was currently shocked when I had blood work and it came back good. No sugar, heart, thyroid, or cholesterol problem, just over weight. What do we do when the obstical is a family member? This person will bring all kinds of junk food in the house, including pop. If I try working out he will laugh, be little, and make rude comments. I'm ashamed of the way I look, and have no support in my quest to lose weight. I ask how does a person over come this obstical.

Hi Taz .Welcome to 3FatChicks. There are many people who have this same problem including me. My DH is a big junk food eater and it's always in the house. You have to become very strong. Make sure you have your healthy food in the house. It will be very hard but it's either that or stay fat. You can do this! The first time you avoid the junk food you will be so proud. All your life people will have junk food around. You have to be able to learn not to put it in your mouth. And the comments...the best way to stop them is to succeed at this. Stick around and make some friends here. They will help you. You really have an advantage that you have no medical issues starting out.

Good luck to you.

hi taz.. I know how hard it can be without much support. I have four kids and I still keep things in the house for them to snack on that I myself cannot eat. my husband is thin and doesnt seem to understand how had it is to diet when he is sitting there eating pizza and other things I cant have.. I'm not comfortable going to the gym and working out in front of people just yet. so I get up before everyone in the house and stay up after they have gone to bed to get my work outs in. maybe something you can try. you can do this we all can and I agree that the best way to shut up a negative person is to prove them wrong. you just have to want it and once you start to get it done then you will feel so good about yourself.

Is that family member your significant other? Because what you are describing is emotional abuse and isn't ok. Bringing junk food in the house is fine. That is your issue, not theirs, so they should be allowed to bring whatever food they want to eat into the house and it is up to you not to eat it. But making fun of you for trying to get healthy is totally not ok. If it is your significant other, you need to tell them that it is hurtful and you don't appreciate their abuse. If they continue, then you should consider whether that is a relationship you want to keep in your life. Toxic relationships are not healthy for your well-being.

As for the rest, I found that, at least at the beginning of my journey, at a higher weight, it was enough to cut back on the junk I was eating. Didn't even have to cut it out entirely. Just have 1 cookie instead of 5, or one less piece of pizza than I usually would have, or a handful of chips instead of half the bag. As time went by, I found myself eating less and less of it. I now have a small square of chocolate (about the size of a kiss) once or twice a day, but not much else for sweets, and not much at all for salty foods. I'll occasionally have a few corn chips, but not often, maybe once or twice a month. But it took me months to get to that point. I used to eat 3 small tacos whenever we'd make them. Gradually, I started only eating 2. Last night, I had 2 and felt stuffed afterward, so I may cut back to just 1 or 1.5 now. In other words, I haven't made huge changes all at once. I've made many small ones, over a longer period of time. And the only exercise I've done is walking, but I do it almost every day, for at least 2 miles. But I worked up to that as well. When I started, one mile was more difficult than I had hoped.
