Default Boot Camp Challenge-Day 8

OBSTACLE COURSE

Today we will be running an obstacle course. Some of you may be familiar with the concept, but I'll cover it for you uninitiated!

You will be asked to cover a certain amount of territory in a set amount of time. While you are making your way towards your goal, obstacles will be placed in your way. Now some of these obstacles will be from outside sources. But the worst obstacles will be the ones you create yourself!

I expect each and every one of you to demonstrate your techniques for getting past these obstacles. How you choose to handle your unique situation will determine your success....or failure. You must be goal oriented, single minded in your desire to overcome these obstacles, and stubborn. Each and everyone of you is a winner, and I fully expect you to master this course!

I will give you an example of some obstacles I have dealt with already today:

Bad day at work created a desperate need for comfort food. I am having steel cut oats with an egg tossed in for protein. OP, but very comforting. Obstacle defeated!

Due to oversleeping (selfmade obstacle!) I did not have time for my workout last night. So I did as much as I had time for instead of skipping the whole thing. Success takes many forms, troops!

Drove past Krispy Kreme, McDonalds, Burger King, Bob Evans, Friendly's and numerous other obstacles on my way home. Wanted to stop for b'fast but instead promised myself a nice comforting breakfast at home. Sometimes you just have to listen to your own advice!

Now, on to the nitty gritty:

Day 7 goals:

1. OP...that should go without saying by now!
2. Exercise...same here.
3. Water...ditto.
(I'm going to start referring to these 3 goals as the "trinity." Seems like they are the same everyday! )
Managed to master the "trinity!"
4. Get back into by "early to bed" routine after 3 days off. Got to bed a bit later than planned but it couldn't be helped. I slept later than planned, too! Shift work can be a major obstacle some days!

35 minutes exercise/activity

Day 8 goals:

1. The Trinity (food, water, exercise)
2. Reflect on obstacles I DIDN'T overcome and see if I can find a pattern.
3. Make the chocolate ricotta creme before the ricotta spoils.

Okay recruits! Get out there and face those obstacles! Report back here with what your obstacles were and how you overcame them! I have confidence in all of you!

Yesterday was 5689 steps on the pedometer BUT that was not a special walk - just general running around which should count. You can put on lots of miles when shopping. I fully intended to walk after Hershey's job but it was pouring so we just came home. I did manage a quick lunch but not enough food obviously as I got the carb hungries at 4 and just "had to have" a piece of bread. However, it was multi-grain flax with Not Butter so was not too bad.

Today's obstacle is that I will probably be home (and in the kitchen) most of the day. My strategy will be to have my huge glass of water on the counter all the time. DH is a bit of a neatnik and sometimes puts it in the dishwasher! Today he has been warned!

I'm going to spend my day recovering from shell shock after having walked into a 5 foot writing spider web while walking Lola this morning! Talk about getting your cardio! The clothes immediately started to drop. I don't even remember getting from point A to point B, but I was nearly naked by the time I got there! I went back out, armed with a can of Hornet spray (it's all I had) and the enemy was still perched on the carport overhang. I think I hit him, but I don't know if he was dead or wounded. Regardless, I'm scarred for life and will never walk outside again.

My goals:

Do the Trinity.
I already did my cardio.
Train Lola to use an indoor litter box.
Move to the big city.

Franny~~You are so right about every day being an obstacle course. It's a great way to look at it.

My biggest obstacle lately has been exercise but I did manage to start again yesterday by riding my stationary recumbent bike . It's a start....

Todays goals will be the trinity, as I also need to work on getting enough water. My biggest obstacle today will be my weekly dinner out with DH.

Lizzie reporting:

Doing better today. My goals of course are the 'trinity' and I have done my exercise. 35 minutes at Curves and 5 miles on the bike. I just have to keep pushing the water.

Suzanne: There is nothing I hate more than giant spider webs dragging across my face. And you always know there is a giant spider lurking . Glad you got him. Now that really is an obstacle.

Frannie: You wanted us to try something new. I have been hungry for soup, so today made my own version of low-carb minestrone. I think the only thing I left out was the 'kitchen sink'. I did have to put about 1/2 half cup of whole wheat pasta in the batch, but since the whole thing was about 3 quarts, I don't think that pasta will be too damaging. Just couldn't think of minestrone without a little pasta. Isn't it great we can have whole wheat.

So far have been on plan. My challenge is going to be all next week as we are leaving on a weeks vacation and I expect we will be eating out a lot. So I have to really think through my goals for next week as I won't be able to check in with Sarge every day. Have any ideas? Lizzie (Ann)

Goals today:

1. The trinity .. already did 60 minutes cardio, 30 minutes weights, 48 oz of water so far and eggs for breakfast and lunch (bored!!)

2. TOM ... stay away from the scale!!!

3. Be patient and not let this horrid mood I am in effect the rest of my household ...

Ruth, of course all those running around steps count!!! (I have to figure out how to set my damn pedometer ... maybe if I see how much I am really doing I'll feel better on the days I take off from "real" exercise ...

Suzanne, my 16 year old son FREAKS over a little teeny spider, at least it took a mammoth one to spook you ... (hope he's not only wounded ... he might try to get revenge!!!)

Have a nice day everyone!!!

Oh lordy, Franny... can we do this one again tomorrow, please? I read it too late. You're not going to believe this (well, some of you will have no trouble), but I've just eaten 12 chocolate chip granola bars.
If I overcome the obstacle of eating the other 12 in the box (gotta get those big bargain boxes!), I'll let you know.

I HAVE had a lot of water today, though. And I had a great workout at the Y with DH. About 75 minutes. Cardio and weights.
It was so good that I have severe muscle pain and a wicked headache.
Oh, and then we grocery shopped. Which was another major workout.
I also failed Sflake by snapping at a rude woman in the grocery store.
Had a nap in my hammock.
Cuddled my rambunctious seven year old in the hammock after school.
Had a bath. And five Advil.

Congratulations Franny, Sflake, Suzanne (love your goals, Suzanne ), Sil, Lizzie and Nikki! You are all doing so well!!

sflake-great job on the trinity and on overcoming your obstacle to exercise...I'm facing that particular obstacle right now!

Ruth-I checked, and a mile is approx 2000-2500 steps, so you are logging a couple of miles without even trying! When you hit 10,000 you are getting in 4-5 miles! Pretty impressive! My neatnik DH is forever putting my stuff "away." Nice, but he often can't remember WHERE he put anything!

Suzanne- Yuck. That would put me off of not only walking outdoors, but of BEING outdoors! Let me know how it goes with Lola....this could be interesting!

2BEFIT1-You WILL overcome your upcoming obstacle...Develop your strategy: have a healthy snack before you go, review your reasons for wanting to stay OP (or close to it!), drink lots of water at dinner, try and make the healthiest choices possible, etc. I have tried the stationary recumbent bike at work, but it makes my butt numb!?

Lizzie-Glad to see things are getting back on track for you. Your minestrone sounds delish! I love a big pot of soup simmering on the stove. My DH has switched from noodles to barley in most of his soups, bless him! Have a wonderful time on your vacation, and don't sweat it too much. Try to plan ahead...but be as flexible as possible. Maybe plan on relaxing your goals in some areas (food?) but raising the bar in others (walk like a demon?)

Nikki-great job on the trinity! Maybe you can find some small "ME" time to help with the moods? And HIDE that scale! You don't need any setbacks right now!

Ellis, dear, of course we can do this tomorrow! We can do this everyday! I am sure that today isn't the only day in which we will be faced with obstacles, and we all need practice getting over them! I had to have my DH HIDE all the snacks he buys for the kids. That way I would really have to hunt for them and he would know when I found them So, make a plan for tomorrow's obstacles and we'll just try again. And it sounds like your nap and cuddle in the hammock with your DS (and the Advil) were just what the doctor (or drill sergeant!) ordered!

Now I am off to get in my exercise for today. DH and DS are at soccer, so no excuses. Well, I could think of some but I'll refrain.

Frannie: Confession time. One obstacle I didn't completely overcome. My DH had some apple pie. I just had to have a taste, but I did follow Marcies 3 bite rule. Hope that counts, as just getting my foot wet, not falling in the pond. :

Ellis: Tomorrow is another day. Thank goodness. Tell me, do you think if one puts peanut butter on a piece of toast that it cancels out the effects of the carbs? Hope so.

I promise to do better tomorrow. Have to, as on Sunday we will be off for North Georgia mountains for vacation. Lizzie

Thank you, Franny. I hope you got your exercise in okay!! Good idea... I'm going to get my daughter to hide the snacks. She's VERY supportive of my losing weight.

Yes, Gofishin'... you skinny minny, you. I CAN eat 12 granola bars in one day. I could probably easily eat 2 boxes of 24.

Gee, Lizzie. Not sure about that peanut butter on toast theory.
I hope you have a wonderful time in the mountains. It sounds divine.

Lizzie-Dr. A does say that it is better to have some fat or protein with carbs as it helps your body metabolize it more slowly...although I'm not sure toast w/PB was what he had in mind! I have to admit that I eat PB on occasion. Since I can't eat nuts (braces ) I figure a tablespoon (or 2! ) of PB once in a while won't hurt. I put it on whole grain bread...it's a real treat for me!

Have a blast on your vacation!
