Short answer- yes. People that do long distance hiking, such as the Pacific Crest Trail, generally hike 8-12 hours a day and they usually lose a ton of weight if they had weight to lose.

But... unless you're doing something like that, is that sustainable for you? That's a lot of walking. You're much better off starting out with baby steps rather than jumping into something like that and burning yourself out or even sustaining an injury. I started out just walking outside a half hour a day and that jump started my weight loss.

Yes but... Do you really have six hours out of a day to spare? What are your goals besides losing weight? And as Dee said do you have the physical stamina ability to be able to do something like that? Controlling what you eat is going to be a lot easier than controlling how much you can exercise. And it really depends on what you're eating and how much of it. Tell us more specifics about your goals and your current health and lifestyle so we can guide you in a better direction.

Although I feel that exercise is so important for your health and well-being, it's been said that you can't outrun your fork. In other words, it's your food choices and portions that are going to contribute to your weight loss much more than your exercise.

It is probably good to balance your fitness plan and diet plan. Do not just focus on one activity or you may over do it. You can mix cardio and strength exercise, instead of walking for almost 6 hours a day. Doing that can also save time and you can do other stuff..

I personally believe that walking really helps with weight loss. In my case, I lost inches on my tummy just because I worked at a mall and walked practically all day. But that's another story.

At any rate, yes, walking is beneficial to weight loss. BUT there are many things to consider. 6 hours of walking may be too much for the rest of your body. Your legs or feet may sustain long-term problems in the future. Along with all the other concerns that were brought up by the others in this thread.

What you need is a program that is sustainable for you. Weight loss is more than just changing your body. It's all about changing your lifestyle. So consider reducing the number of hours you walk, and do a more balanced weight loss program that effectively combines exercise and proper nutrition. All the best to you!
