Default Trying again

Hello!

So here I am trying to find a way to better motivate myself to continue to lose weight.

Height: 4' 10.5"

Highest weight: 245 (270 pregnant, but that's another story)
Current weight: 224
Goal weight: 135

I have been overweight since as long as I can remember really, about 9-10 years old? At about 11 years old my doctor recommended I go on Atkins, and it all spiraled from there. I've ALWAYS been dieting. It never worked. Something seems to always stop me, or I self-sabotage. I have lived almost my whole life not fulfilling my potential because of my weight. It is something I am sensitive of, but honestly have embraced at this point (being 26) because it feels like this is just my life now. But I have a 2 1/2 year old son that I can't let down and need to stay around for. I can't let this just be it...

Last year I got down to 199, and due to my anxiety, I was having chest pains and told to stop exercising. So that really slowed my progress down. Then I got on anti-depression medication and my energy went down and my appetite up. I also took on a very stressful job which has led to me gaining the 25 pounds back in less than a year.

So here I am, trying again. Going this weekend to see about joining the YMCA and really trying to focus on eating healthily versus counting calories...

I believe if I am unsuccessful this time, it will be gastric sleeve surgery for me. So I am going to try to give it my all and really try to figure out WHY I keep failing mentally and physically.

Thanks for reading! I would love some pointers towards good forums or places on the site maybe I should join? And if anyone ever needs a friend or someone to talk to, message me and I will listen!

Thanks so much for reading if you made it this far!

Hi and welcome to 3FC! There are many boards on this site that I am sure would be helpful for you. Maybe try the chicks up for a challenge board for a little added motivation. Make sure to drink plenty of water and in my experience I have found that I need to avoid artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols or they stall my progress. I eat low carb and this is the first time I have stuck with a diet for more than 3 weeks. I am almost 4 months in and still going strong. It is almost the same at atkins. Maybe make a vision board and set small achievable goals to help keep you focused on the big goal. Best wishes to you and you can message me anytime as well

Thank you so much for the advice! I have been trying to avoid artificial sugars for awhile now! I have recently due to my job (at home daycare to 3 kids 3 and under) began drinking caffeine to keep up with these kids; however, I am trying to find alternative methods that aren't as unhealthy. I tend to over sugar and cream my coffee. I have a private vision board on pinterest that I often look at! I REALLY appreciate the reply and tips. Congrats on 4 months going strong! Can I ask what your exercise regime looks like?

Tip for reducing your sugar/cream additions - maybe try a different coffee. I find that the good stuff really doesn't need anything extra! Welcome 3FC,see you around the boards.

Welcome! Since this is something that's been hard for you for a long time, making small changes sounds sensible. I know it's frustrating to take it slowly, but if quick fixes worked, you'd know it by now! Plus it's healthier to be overweight than to be yoyo dieting, both physically and especially in terms of your mental health. Something it may be comforting to remember is that having a great deal of dieting experience means you have a great deal of data on what does and does not work for you.

Thanks for the support!

I have had a rough weekend... I was having shortness of breath and chest pains that ended up being fluid around the lungs and heart (probably from a virus or infection) but I ended up arresting in the ER and needed CPR to revive, so I had a 2 night stay in the hospital. As it turns out, I have extreme responses to vasovagal syncope as well as possible auto immune diseases (need further tests), possible sleep apnea (need further tests) and possible postural orthostatic tachcardia syndrome (need further tests). So I have lots of DR appointments in the future.

I am not allowed to drive or to exercise for two weeks... which stinks, because yet again I am being thrown off my weight loss plan, but I am here and alive so that is all that matters! I am very glad to be home with my husband and son and furbaby.

If anyone has any weightloss tips for someone who needs to add salt to their diet as well as stay calm and not move too much, please let me know! lol

Holy crap, that's a lot to happen to you! Hope you're feeling better...

Adding salt is easy, just add a portion of pickled veg or olives to your day. If that's not appealing to you, and your Dr is recommending you add salt, just keep a shaker on the table and add a little sprinkle onto your meals.

As for staying calm, I strongly recommend meditation and reading.

Keep it mind, fat loss is 90% from your diet, 10% from exercise. So you can continue on your journey by focusing on getting in enough protein, lots of vegetables, and keeping refined carbs/sugar to a minimum.

If you're at all unsure what the best course of action is for your individual needs, I'd recommend sitting down with a registered dietician to figure out what's enough/too much of anything you may need to maintain and improve your health. Best wishes!

Adding salt is not that easy, you need a lot more salt than that. You will need to be salting your food heavily and also your drinks. Go to the DINET forum to learn more about the POTS. I wrote a thread about electrolytes here a day or so ago, think it's in the general Weight Loss Support forum. I have POTS and haven't passed out once since going on meds (ivabradine in my case) and drinking lots of water and salt as per my cardiologist's instructions.

As for the diet, just eat at maintenance for the time being, and do not try to restrict. This is really not the time, and will make your heart issues worse. Focus on keeping your blood sugar stable, that will help with the POTS. Wholegrains are good for this, as is sourdough bread, and making sure you get enough protein and fat.

Lots of sympathy coming your way. Illness/disability are really hard, aren't they. I'm so glad you made it through alive.

By the way, POTS can cause anxiety. So if you can get treatment for that, and you can start on the fluids and salt yourself, then it may well help other things too.

OK, now I have the physical keyboard, I can actually reply properly. DINET is the website about dysautonomia, which is another word for POTS. Here is its forum. This may be a better place for you than a weight loss forum at the moment, while things are in crisis and you need to focus on the medical side of things. There is loads of information on the main site, it's not just a forum. Here is the thread I wrote on electrolytes in this forum the other day. The cardiologist I saw told me to drink three litres (100 oz) of water and I think have 10g of salt a day, and I was probably 120lb at the time. You'd need to scale up. (Although we are about the same height! *waves*) Hopefully you will get professional medical advice on this soon, but meanwhile ask the folks at DINET. They will know enough to give you basic guidance on how much to drink and how to get enough salt in the meantime. You should probably have been getting saline IVs at the hospital, but hospitals aren't very good with POTS patients. This is another reason to talk to the POTS community, they can advise you on how to tackle this. One problem, for instance, is that if you have to stay in hospital they may try to put you on a low-salt diet by default, and that would be actively dangerous.

I came back to your post because I am fretting slightly at the idea of someone [I]going into cardiac arrest and needing to be revived[I], and then coming to a weight loss forum the next day to ask how to diet the best way. My guess is that you're in shock and are trying to get control back of your body, and that dieting is the familiar way for you to do this. Also the media in particular put the fear of God into people for being fat and tell them it'll kill them.

From everything I know about POTS and the conditions which tend to turn up with it (including autoimmune and so forth - again, DINET will be good with this side of things), being overweight is probably not what caused your cardiac arrest yesterday. POTS is. It's a really serious medical condition, it killed my best friend's ex-partner. Right now, you urgently need to get that under control, and any other medical problems which came up yesterday.

Your weight is not the priority. Dieting is hard on the body, and people who have been struggling with it since childhood often go for more extreme diets which are really hard on the body. Please do not diet right now. It could be really dangerous. Once things have settled enough and it is safe for you to do so, which may be months, go very slowly. I am aiming for 0.5lb weight loss a week, with my POTS reasonably well under control and not in danger like you are, because I cannot risk cutting my nutrients too low. If I were to have a medical emergency, I would immediately stop dieting.

If you binge from all the stress, that is absolutely fine. It's a coping mechanism, it's unlikely to do any harm short-term. You will deal with the weight later. Once you have the medical conditions under control, and chances are the medical conditions are a big reason why you have so much difficulty with your weight, you will actually be able to tackle the weight and it will be much, much easier. For instance, you won't be getting breathless and dizzy all the time. Also if it's any help, I have severe ME/CFS and I lost over a quarter of my body weight without trouble in 2011 without doing the slightest bit of exercise.

I don't know how you are coping with everything else, or where you are. Are you in a country with good healthcare access? Are things OK financially? Organise people to help with the childcare, because this is heavy-duty stuff you are doing and you need to minimise stress and exertion, as well as having something in place in case you need to stay in hospital for a spell. You may also need to have a pet-sitter lined up. Your husband should be ready to take time off work if needed, if that's something that involves advance planning. Have a friend or a therapist or someone you can talk to about the shock of nearly dying and having life-threatening medical conditions, even if it's just calling a helpline for a wail. If you have a support network - friends, family, religious community, whatever - now is the time to activate it.

I'd suggest going to DINET as your first port of call, learning the basics, sorting out getting enough fluids and salt. I use Nuun tablets for my electrolyte drinks and they are very popular amongst people with POTS. Then maybe take some time to relax, mainline a few silly TV shows or whatever works for you for relaxing. Take a few days off before you start researching the various other medical conditions they're investigating you for. And realistically, stay away from dieting forums for the time being!

Best of luck, hon. It must be absolutely terrifying, but you are getting medical care now and this is the start of things getting better.
