Question Help needed for Saturday!!!

Hi, everyone!

I need your advice...
On Saturday my brother and his wife are having this big family GET-Together for the Labor Day weekend. We always have a great time swimming, fishing, and EATING!!!

Here's my problem...
Long before I started SBD (which was 4 days ago) I promised my SIL I would bring my DB favorite dishes, Potato Salad, and Pineapple Upside Down Cake. The meat they are having is grilled Brats.
Of course I love all of these things, but I'm afraid it would completely wipe out any progress I may have had this first week... if you know what I mean!!!

I'm hoping that some of you who have been successful on SBD can give me some solid advice for how I might handle the day.

Any Suggestions?

Maybe you can take something more "beach friendly" to eat? Maybe a marinated chicken breast to grill and a nice green salad? Your family will probably not mind tossing the chicken on the grill along with the brats. You could still make your signature dishes, and even maybe have a "sample" of each. But if you eat something on plan beforehand you won't be so tempted to overdo it? Planning ahead is half the battle! Oh, and if there are any leftovers of what you are making...leave them there! I learned that lesson the hard way!

Good luck!

Thanks Frannymae!

Sounds like solid advice. I will take some food for myself, and try to stay on plan. Grilled Chicken and a nice salad sounds pretty good, actually.
Have to convince myself that the socializing is to be the most important part of the day.
Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how everything goes.

Good for you for planning ahead.

They won't mind eating or cooking something for you. They are friends and family. They will be PROUD of you.

Remember the 3 bite rule and do make your signature dishes.

Good Luck and have FUN.

One thing to keep in mind, people really don't notice what you are eating so do your own thing. Any comments can be met with a smile. It works for me.

Thanks everyone for encouraging me to stay on plan for Saturday. You are right!! No one really will notice what I am eating.
Lady Windsong and sflake...What is the 3 bite rule??? Let me know. I will add it to my list of "to do" things for the picnic.
You guys are the BEST for advice and encouragement. This site is helping me stay the right path for SBD.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!

The 3 bite rule is for when you really really really want something that isn't op. Insted of denying yourself, you take 3 bites of it and walk away. Hopefully you will have satisified your desire. But really savour it.

I have only officially been on SBD for about 45 minutes so I can't comment on actual foods...but I do know how to work with this situation. I was a vegetarian for 17 years.....I used to make little vegetable packages that I think would work on SBD, my favorite veggies with a clove of garlic and sliced purple onions you can add some butter or olive oil. Seal the packets, throw them on the grill, or even in the coals if you use heavy duty foil. These little veggie packets everyone will see and want because the are so good, these healthy treats became my signature dish with my friends....Also, bring some extra chicken breast, you will inspire someone who will probably want to eat healthy and find yourself a buddy.....I have never had a problem when I bring more healthy food to a BBQ. The same with the Salad, if you bring a healthy salad with you, people will eat it with you. Just make sure that you make yourself a plate before it all goes, because it will.

I also bring a small bags of filler foods whenever I go so that i can grab a bag of veggies, string cheese or whatever foods are permissable. Just don't cook hungry and you won't be tempted to cheat when your making your signature dishes and if you do, the guidelines here sound great....I don't remember thr 4th bite ever! Been doing that for years. Happy Labor Day!!!

Default Deets

"The meat they are having is grilled Brats. "

At first, I didn't know what you meant . . . "they're grilling the kids?????????"

Me so silly!

HAHAHAHA!!! That is funny Tricia!!!!!

Last BBQ I went to I had ribs (small amount of sauce on them, and too high fat.) and LOTS of the salad that I brought. I still lost weight despite the fatty meat!!!

Thumbs down THANKS!!!

Wow!!
These picnic suggestions are getting better and better!

Lavendar Fields...You crack me up ....."Brats" on the grill really isn't the kids! They are short for Bratwurst (big sausages) which are wonderful on the grill...and loaded with fat!!!!

Rowan Bailey....you may be new to SBD, but I absolutely love your idea about the Veggie packets on the grill. I am going to try those very soon. Great idea!

THANKS everyone.... This will get me going in the right direction!

Veggies in aluminum foil marinated with garlic and Olive Oil and tossed on the grill is the BOMB!
Even though I know how good Brats and Potato salad are try to remember the HEAVY Feeling you get after eating them. If anyone says anything about you bringing your own food tell them " I am having stomach problems" People usually just nod and perhaps feel bad for you. I have done that at Family gatherings when in reality the only "stomach problem" I had was that I put too much in it! lol But you aren't really lying!!
