Well, you've come to the right place to get support and motivation!
I imagine that it seems overwhelming, first starting out. There are so many diets that one could follow! There are Weight Watchers people on here, paleo folks, calorie counters... As for me, calorie counting combined with a whole foods/low carbs approach has worked tremendously.
My advice is that you do a little research on the boards and see what would fit best into your busy lifestyle as a mother.
