Noticed wee bugs on the counter today - as small as pepper grains but moved like ants. They were! I took the darn thing apart and found an aunt colony inside. They certainly panicked and started running around carrying eggs and even crawling up my arms. I'm still feeling them after a hot shower.
The machine is now outside on a potting table and will be leaving with the next trash pick-up. I can't imagine what attracted them to set up housekeeping in the coffee maker!
Did you like the Keurig? What are you going to replace it with?
DH wanted a Keurig since they first come out. He complained that he wanted to be able to make his own coffee flavors and blah, blah, blah. He is NOT the big coffee drinker in the house I am. He just had to have one, though. So a friend of ours bought my DH one for Christmas. I was livid. I refused to set the thing up. About 6 months later MY coffee pot died. Such a sad day. I didn't have time to run out immediately to buy a new coffee maker so I broke out the Keurig. I thought OK, so I will do this. I hated the coffee from day one. I finally found some coffee that I liked and DH could have whatever flavor stuff he liked (and he could make it on his own, yeah right ). My coffee was especially expensive since I like strong coffee and had to use 2 pods for each mug (I drink 3 mugs a day). We went out of town during the Christmas holidays. We stayed at a hotel that had some type of single cup mini coffee pot. The flavor was awful and it just wasn't working for me. I decided to go out and buy me a regular coffee pot with real coffee. I was in love again! I took my coffee pot home with me and moved the Keurig over to the side. I have been making my regular coffee ever since and love it. DH still won't use the Keurig. I still have to make it for him. This week he asked me to get him some of the Starbucks bottled coffee so he can take with him when he leaves early on the weekends. This was the whole purpose behind the Keurig! He could use it on his own. When the big Keurig dies, I will probably buy him a single use Keurig so it won't take up so much room.
Wow! I needed to get that off my chest!
Again, what type of coffee maker are you going with?
Oh gross, my skin is crawling just thinking of it!!! I was always told that coffee deters ants. Guess not in this case. Gross gross gross
Diana - How about Starbucks Via for your husband? Its instant coffee, but - and this is coming from an extreme coffee lover who also hates Keurig and generally can't stand Starbucks coffee - it is fantastic. The Italian Roast specifically. They can be pricey, but Costco sometimes has them and Amazon has them in bulk for less than $1/each. Literally dump it in the mug and mix with hot water. Done. We use it for backpacking and camping.
Otherwise, sounds like he just needs a kick in the rear LOL

What kind of coffee maker did you get? We drink our coffee "robust and bold" also and have one that fills thermos directly so it doesn't burn or get cold. We drink 2 or more pots a day for the 3 of us.
Afraid we are going to need a new one soon and all I see are the single serving kind (forget it) or ones that have the glass container sit on eye and burn. I hate burnt coffee.
Rose, how disgusting to find bugs in your beloved coffee pot!! Hope it doesn't turn you away from good cup of coffee.

Our cuisinart is dying a slow, wet death. Water disappears into some space it isn't supposed to be in, so pots are short. Eventually it starts leaking. Our new coffeemaker, a different and cheaper type since I went through 2 of these in 7 years, arrives today. I might just have to take ours apart because now I am curious.
Ruth, do you take your pods out of the machine right after it's finished brewing? That may be what attracted the ants, especially if you used any of the flavored coffee pods.
I don't use any of the flavored pods, but I know my DS will occasionally brew a glass of the pre-sweetened iced tea in it, so I will be on the look-out for ants, but I am diligent about taking out the used pod and cleaning the machine after each use.
I absolutely love my Black and Decker single serve coffee maker (mine is a generation older than the one pictured). I use my own coffee - Dunkin' Donuts Dark Roast - in a scoop sized according to my taste.
Just like the Keurig , you fiddle about with water, coffee, and mug, then walk away and come back in a couple of minutes to a fresh cup of coffee.

I bought a cheap $10 Proctor Silex. No bells and whistles, no timers, no clocks, no programming, no flashing lights. It's a 10 cup pot. I fill it up and drink the whole thing, which is 3 of my mugs.
