Default Why did you pick your specific goal?

We all have different goals, even those of us who are about the same height. Why are you working towards the number you picked?

Does your goal coincide with a certain time in your life like senior year of high school?

Does the number have a special meaning like the weight you were on your wedding day or how much you weighed when you first met your future spouse?

Do you like a nice, even, round number, for example, "My goal is to lose 100 pounds!"

Or are you working strictly towards a number based on the BMI chart?

Such a great thread! I don't have any idea of a number for my goal weight!! I hear people talk about how the charts are so misleading. I haven't been a "normal" weight since 1st grade. The numbers I always talk about with that in mind is I went from a 6x to a size 14 Chubby...and that is always a joke cuz I really don't know.

I am excited to see what others have done. Of course I know "the numbers" will be up to me. There are numbers that mean something to me.

These are some numbers that are goals:
to wear a 3x
wear an 18
be under 200 lbs
not be obese
I guess there are lots of numbers that are goals!

I'm a little bit of everything.

My initial goal was to weigh 180 bc that was what my license said I weighed and that was my weight when I met/married my husband. (Side note: TODAY IS OUR 12TH ANNIVERSARY!)

But since I reached that goal, I decided to go further and align my goal with a healthy BMI.

My goal isn't really set in stone yet. I picked 130 because based on the information I looked up that was within the healthy BMI range, just on the higher side of it. Even at my most athletic in high school (where I was practicing sports 2-3 hours a day minimum and could run a 5 minute mile), I was never really below 140, so my goal may change as I get closer to it and actually see what I look like.

I have a lot of mini-goals along the way as far as the scale goes. Right now every 15lbs lost. Then getting under 200, getting out of obese BMI.. eventually I'll have it set to every 10lbs instead.

I picked 120 because that's the weight I was when I started college, and even THEN I wasn't eating that healthy... but I was younger, so I got away with it.

When I was about 12, I got a magazine that had a free sample for Christian Dior lotions that supposedly helped with sagging skin. The sample came with a chart which showed the ideal weight for women according to their height. For my height, the ideal weight was 130 lbs. It's stupid but I'm 27 now and I still want to get to that weight, just to see what it's like.

I picked 145 because that's the first number that makes me officially "not overweight".

Also, it's probably the number I settled in at the most during my 20s so it seems to be a weight my body is comfortable at. And it's the number I picked to put on my driver's license. Ultimately, though, I'd like to be able to fluctuate consistently between 140 and 145.

I originally picked 149 as my goal because BMI wise that was the top end of normal. I then picked 135 because that seems to be right in the middle of that (although I know BMI is definitely not the best way to determine your health and fit level...

Ooh, these are nice questions!

Well, I was technically very close to having an overweight BMI, so I wanted to avoid that, but I'm also doing it for aesthetic quite a lot. I always have to wear a slimming girdle and I'm very uncomfortable wearing any kind of clothing that isn't incredibly loose, so I just want to be able to wear a regular t-shirt without sucking my stomach in and being constantly self-conscious. I don't know how much I'd have to lose so precisely, so I just went for what would be within the range of a healthy BMI but that's still lower than what I am right now. (Also, the number is a nice round one haha I'm losing about 10kg (

I first chose 180, because when I asked my Dr what he thought would be a good weight for someone my height and build that was the number he gave me, but I felt it was still to big. So I looked up my BMI range and 160 was towards the upper level of healthy for me. So for a beginning goal it's 160, but I also know that more than likely I'll want to go lower by 10-20 lbs. So it's more of a lose and see how I feel about that weight kinda thing.

I picked 140, because, at this time in my life, I felt like it was a weight I could live with and maintain.

A lot of consideration went into this.

I chose this, 3 years ago, at 52. I have twin boys, and at the time I chose this goal, I had 2 grand kids. Now I have 4!

When I got knocked up, with the boys, I was 132, and 19 years old. But I did not arrive at 132 in a good way.

So fast forward, a goal weight, is an arbitrary number. It differs, from person to person. What do we feel good at? What do we think we can maintain, without undue suffering? How are we built? What about food sensitivity?

It all matters.

The charts and the BMI and the Dr and yada, yada so on and so forth, cannot take into consideration all the factors.

So, it's up to us to choose, a spot where we feel good, look good and most important, our health is good.

145 is the highest weight I can be and not be overweight according to BMI. I have a front and rear bumper like a 57 Cadillac regardless of how much weight I lose, so I couldn't see myself much less than 150.

The number is arbitrary, when you get down to it. I'm going to find a calorie level and exercise level I can live with long term and see how far that takes me.

I'm not willing to eat nothing but lettuce and exercise 3 hours a day just to maintain a certain number on the scale.

I picked 120 because all the healthy weight calculators online told me I should be between 110-119. I've never been that weight as an adult or a teenager.

Personally I'm a little confused by it. 120 is on the high end, but that still sounds too skinny for me personally. Just the weight I am, what I look like at 180... I carry my weight pretty well even at this weight and even though I could look better and fit clothes better and be healthier, most people think I'm twenty pounds ligter than I really am. I don't know what would be left of me at 120 pounds, I feel like it would be too skinny! I still want to have curves. But, I also really want to be healthy. Healthy for my husband, for my future kids and for pregnancy (lots of family members had problem pregnancies because of the extra weight) and healthy for me! At high school I was 136 and I remember still feeling chubby at that weight and wanting to loose ten pounds. But not fifteen to twenty pounds off of that!!! I honestly just don't know. I want to be skinnier than I was at high school, cause I was still over weight then, and I'm curious. I'm curious what adult me is going to look like without the weight. But it still sounds like too much. So confused!!!

So I'm gonna take it one day at a time and see how I feel. Maybe I'll get down to 120 and be surprised at how heavy I am and go down to the recommended 115ish range. Or maybe I'll get to 130 and feel like any less would be too little and I'll stay there.

Hmm, I've asked myself this same question a few times throughout this process! I have never been as light as my goal weight before, but looking at others (athletes, celebrities) whose figure I admire, this seems to be a good weight for my height. Not light enough to be 'skinny', but aiming for a lean and fit physique :-)

I picked a weight at about the middle of what's considered normal for a woman my height and my age.

The low end seemed like it would be too low and perhaps too difficult to maintain. The high end seemed just too fat.
