On Tuesday i began my journey again - yay! The first week is always the hardest for me as I have quite severe anxiety and I'm worried that through all my hard work, it might not work, or I might do something wrong, etc D:
I weighed myself just now (I know I shouldn't have, it was too tempting xD) and it looks like I may have lost 2lbs so far. I feel a little worried as in the past my first week losses have been more significant, and with the majority of that first loss being water, I am worried I haven't made a difference at all! I know there are two days left but will that make a huge difference? D:
I started at 298 lbs and have eaten 1650 calories a day this week, and eaten back about half of my exercise calories on top of that (I have been making myself a lot more active with swimming, walking and a few seconds of running, and judging by the aches in my legs, hopefully gained some muscle mass!). I'm using MyFitnessPal to track it.
Typing this makes me feel a little more reassured... I'm definitely not going to give up as my will is iron... I'm in this for the long haul (currently wrestling with the idea that it may take over a year to get to goal)! I just wish I knew now if it was working - It would seal the deal for me 100% D:
Thank you in advance and so sorry for my ramblings xD
Hi Clara! Congrats on your first week, you seem to be off to a great (and sensible) start!
I know what you mean about the first week. I've had first weeks with 5-8 pound losses. Funny thing is, those weight loss journeys never "took"; in other words, I gained it all back. This time, my first week was a 1-1/2 pound loss, and this time is for good (for keeps, as my name implies). And yes it's taken well over a year just for this first 60 pounds which if you told me that in the beginning I would have probably been too upset to start at all. But if I hadn't started at all a year and a half ago, I would be 60 pounds heavier today, or more. So don't let the slow loss intimidate you. It is better for you in all sorts of ways, physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.
I've not lost much on my first weeks but i've lost a considerable amount of weight throughout the year. I'm a slow and steady loser and that's fine. When i was 20 it was faster, but then again, i did regain it al and some more back. Don't beat yourself down. Just do what you have to do, the results will follow.
I wanted to throw this out there. You said you were anxious about doing something wrong. To that I would say mistakes are wonderful things.
Why?
Because it means you're trying something.
You will learn from those mistakes. When it comes to learning what works for your weight loss, trial and error is a part of the deal. Sure, you can do one of those turnkey diet programs like Medifast or Jenny Craig, and maybe that's what's best for you; I don't know. But generally speaking, diet programs take some flexibility and willingness to learn.
So relax and enjoy seeing your improvements both big and small. Not everything you do will produce an immediate result. Sometimes you'll do everything right and still not see a loss. You might even see a gain. But it's OK as long as you keep trying.
Weight loss isn't steady. Expect losses, stalls, even occasional water weight gain, but just keep going! A year from now you'll be amazed at the difference. Keep a tape measure because the scale isn't always a good tool. There was a time I was shrinking but the scale was showing no difference.
Thankyou very much for your responses and advice <3 This is definitely a fear I have had every time in the past, and I think it is about time I faced it and got over it, so that I can continue without worry I know I am doing everything right to the best of my ability, and this has worked every time before now, so I'll just keep plodding on and adjust accordingly where needed. Thank you very much and hugs to you all <3
When I first started I made a deal with myself NOT to weigh more than every two weeks because I knew if I didn't see a loss, even one pound, I would lose my motivation. That worked for me. Eating less and exercising will definitely move those pounds! Good luck!
Weight loss is very individual. There's no way for you to know if you're doing things "right" unless you try things out. That's what you're doing. You'll be able to tweak things as you keep going.
The advice from others that you got above is all great. It takes time to put weight on and it takes even longer to take it off. Find a way of eating you can live with forever so that you don't just lose the weight and then gain it all back, and then some.
If you weigh for a few weeks and find that the weight loss is just not happening, you might want to consider not eating back your exercise calories. People tend to overestimate how many calories they burn and underestimate how many calories they consume. Or, perhaps this way is awesome for you for now and you might have to change things as you get down to a lower weight. That's just it...there's no way to know, but the less you suffer through the process, the more likely you are to stick to it, so just keep doing what you're doing and keep coming here and keep us posted.
