Default Uncomfy sleeping

This may be the wrong place to post, sorry!

I've lost 25kg (55pounds I think it converts to) and sleeping is just so uncomfy! I like I my side and my hips ache so badly I wake up, I try to lie on my back as it is the most comfortable but I can't seem to feel 'cozy' on my back. I have a pillow between my knees and ankles (as they hurt too) and have a pillow top mattress.

Any ideas on how to get comfortable with this bony issue? Or does anyone else suffer with this? I'm so grumpy from bad sleep

How old is your mattress? I have never felt comfortable on a pillow top type mattress. My husband was having issues and then we bought a tempurpedic like mattress and hasn't had problems since (in the US, the company we bought from was Healthy Back but not sure if they are international)

It's only five years old. I didn't have any issues until I lost weight so I think it's maybe because Ive lost my 'padding'.

I use the Egg Type Mattress cover, they have them at most stores like Wal-Mart, etc...

I also use a pillow between knees and thinner one under my head.

Switching to a satin comforter really helped me, and my kitty kat loves that idea too.

But, I do use motrin like stuff for my achy bones at night. I have neck and lower back pain from an ice skating and a few car accidents, and that just helps me to sleep in lieu of tossing like salad all night...

I've been having this issue too lately. I've heard good things about body pillows, which I"m considering trying out. It's usually my hips that hurt the most.

As silly as it sounds I am really glad it's just not me! It seems like such a ridiculous complaint LOL I just want a really cozy cuddled up deep sleep! Body pillow was a bust for me, didn't do anything my knee/ankle + cuddle pillow wasn't already doing. Might look into the egg type cover... Thanks

I think partly, a pillow top, may cause issues because you aren't 'sinking in' as much and therefore not getting as much support from your mattress that you previously got. That is just my theory. That may not be the case though.

Is it possible that your mattress sort of molded to the old you when you were heavier? We've got an admittedly crappy mattress, it's just a regular old spring one.. no pillow top or anything, but it's definitely sunk in where I've been sleeping for the past year and a half. As I lose weight I wouldn't be surprised if that became uncomfortable and we needed to get a different mattress.

Not so much a fan of the pillow tops here, either. You can't flip them but they're subject to the same problems as traditional springs, more so, in fact, because the "pillow" is just fluffy without being supportive. That was the second mattress my current husband and I bought in about a six year period. Finally we got a Tempurpedic and never looked back.

Having a lifetime of back and neck problems has given me a different perspective on how much money I was willing to spend on a mattress.

I'd say put a Tempurpedic topper on top of your current mattress (flip and rotate the mattress, first). Might cost you $200 but totally worth the money. The true Tempurpedics actually cushion you.

And the body pillow could help, especially if it's thick. I use a firm, very thick pillow under my knee when I lie on my side, so my leg is level from the hip, if that makes sense.

It goes.

I never had a sleep problem but God my ar$e used to hurt sitting on chairs from being too boney.

But the sensation has gone now. You will adjust.

Stangely, I used to find showers painful at first too as the water would sting my less fat body. That sensation has gone away as well.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions

It is good to know it goes away Ian. I am also suffering with the bony butt conundrum and my long relaxing baths are now uncomfortable lol

OMg this was my problem! Had an ah ha moment at a hotel that had a very firm mattress. Both my husband and I slept and awoke painfree. Finally bit the bullet and bought a firm mattress and have slept like a baby ever since! The salesman told us that people dont realize that over time softer mattresses are not great for bodies- especially middle aged ones! (No worries, he wasnt being rude!)

I know there's nothing worse than being dog tired and yet unable to get comfortable enough to actually drift off, but I still have to say I really freakin' miss that bony feeling. It was unpleasant (particularly in a tanning bed) and foreign to me, but it was also a constant reminder at just how far I'd come. Now that I've regained some of that weight, I am itching to sit on a plastic chair and shift uncomfortably for an hour again lol. I can't wait for my shoulder blades to get sore when I lay on a yoga mat. Even the unfortunate near-constant coldness was a small price to pay for self-confidence and the ability to maneuver with ease. My body seems to want to settle at 165lbs as I always bounce back up here but at 5'6, 125lbs I had never looked better and I could run like the wind.
