A little bit about me. I am 58 and female. Over the last few years I have been gaining a little weight, but recently (Jan, 2013) quit smoking and piled on an alarming 40 lbs in just over 5 months!! So I have decided today is the day to do something about that.
I am really glad to have found this site, as I really have no support from the mostly skinny people around me, and sometimes you just need an encouraging word from people who understand where you are at.
I will be cutting way back on carbs, and avoiding processed foods, as well as drinking a ton of water.
Welcome
I know what you mean by the lack of support from people. A lot of people, even good friends, say how it's just simple calories in calories out, but that's not really the case. If it was, none of us will be on this forum still trying to get to our goal weight. I just recently joined also, figured it is time to get myself back.
Welcome, and congrats on quitting smoking. I'm in a similar boat...56 and quit smoking in March of this year. I've put on weight over the years, although in my case it has mainly been eating too much take out when I'm working long hours and don't have time to cook...a habit I need to get out of.
I've found that quitting smoking has actually helped me to lose weight, since I'm now able to exercise more effectively than when I was smoking. Plus I'm able to look at this as a permanent lifestyle change rather than just a "diet", which has helped my motivation. I hope you find the same thing!
