Default dumb question

I don't know anything about GPS (don't have it in my old car). Those gadgets runners wear to keep track of time and distance... are they GPS? And if you have one, do you have to pay for some kind of GPS service to make it work?

Thanks for any help, and thanks for not laughing at my ignorance.

If you have a smart phone there are plenty of free apps to use. I use Cardiotrainer, and I love it. It tracks my distance and speed.

Definitely not a dumb question. I don't know if ALL running watches have GPS in them but that is how a lot of them work. In fact, Garmin, the company who makes GPS systems for cars, also makes watches for running. As far as I know, once you buy the watch you have the service. You don't have to pay a monthly fee or anything like that. That being said, they are pretty expensive watches! I would love to get one some day

I have the Garmin GPS running watch, no need to pay for a service... The watch finds a satellite and you start running... I love mine!!

Some watches have the GPS, but as Sum said, there are plenty of free smart phone apps that track too. Totally fun way to keep track of where you've been and how far you've walked/run.
