Runners, I found this article about running & breathing and it made me wonder if I'm breathing properly (or optimally) while I attempt to run. How do you guys breathe while running? Any specific pattern or regulation method that you feel makes running a bit easier or less stressful on your body?
I call myself a runner but I am really only just starting week 3 of c25k this week. I always try to keep my breath as steady and constant as possible as I find myself holding my breath and not taking in the oxygen I need. I do this too with my Leslie Sansone videos and try to catch myself before she yells at me to breathe!
I have not read the article, which I will do after this, but for me a newbie runner (completed c25k and am now running 3-4 miles 3-4x a week) and I tend to breath in through my nose and out through the mouth. I also make sure my chest and belly rise on the inhale and fall on the exhale. I do sometimes find I breathe too fast and have to force myself to breathe slower.
That article is interesting. I know that breathing is really important and I'm intrigued by the idea of decreasing injury this way. I'll have to play around with it and see if I get any benefit from this rhythmic breathing.
