Default Hello from AsthmaDude

Hello!
I'm new here...trying to lose weight but exercise is impossible due to severe asthma.
I'll be looking around this community for anyone else with the same problem and good advice.

Lord, don't I know it. Every time I think I am getting somewhere, my bad lungs interfere, I end up on steroids, and BOOM! Weight back on.

I have found, for me, the best thing to do is stay away from excercise, at least right now. I have been on a low cal/low fat/low carb diet called Wonderslim (this was recommended to me by my doctor as a cheaper alternative to Medifast.) I have been losing weight, slowly but surely...and I have been being carefully monitored by my allergist, my pulmonary specialist, AND my GP. I have had to take breaks from dieting due to low peak flows and low pulmoray functions. My longest break so far was 2-1/2 months when I ended up in the hospital.

The going is slow. I have been dieting since late July and all three doctors want me at 250 before any will be willing to okay me with anything past walking (well, swimming is okay, but I have to wait for the summer on that because I am allergic to chlorine in the swimming pools. heh.) And when I do walk, they want me to do it indoors.

My best advice...get with your doctor. And if he/she can't get you on a plan that works, find another one. Keep going until you have one (or more such as my case) who agrees this is the best thing for you and is willing to work a plan out with you on what is feasible with your current condition.

Biggest thing...take it slow. Those of us with severe asthma can actually hurt ourselves fairly bad if we try to rush it. Trust me. That was why I ended up in the hospital and dern near dead (O2 sat of 48.) Take it slow. Talk to your doctor. Get his/her advise. Your best bet would be to go to one who gets asthma on a personal level.

Good luck...I know your pain well.

Medifast tastes like ****, but the weight does come off without exercise...may be the way to go.

Medifast DOES taste like ****. Wonderslim is mucho tastier, FWIW (and my doc is A-OKay with me moving to that from Medifast.)

I have asthma as well so I need to be careful with the intensity of my exercise. But! I can do low-intensity for a long time. Exercise does not have to be 'sweatin' like a pig, out of breathe, red-faced and about to collapse'. I can walk for over an hour at a moderate rate and it doesn't shake up my asthma. I still burn the calories and the weight comes off.
