Question The un-intentional beauty of being sick...

Weight loss....it happens when your sick it seems. I have strep throat/tonselitis and i have been living off of slurpees/slushies and popsicles and chicken broth..As a result..i have been losing weight every single day...and i know its not water weight...I was on a low carb/sugar free/low fat diet prior to getting sick and was losing weight..and im still losing weight even while drinking sugar laden slushies...

However.. i cant live off of slushies forever..there is no nutritional benefit to them...and it appears that drinking tomato soup makes my throat burn really bad like acid going down. I managed to get chicken broth down and mushroom soup down but thats about it...I cant even do soggy crackers or toast...

So my question is...what would you do for yourself if you couldnt swallow very well and your throat was really swollen???

Today i decided i would stop the sugar laden slushies and popsicles and attempt to drink my protein shakes..So i managed to get one down...it was painful but i did it..

What would you do?

I carry strep throat. So whenever I get a touch of a fever, I get a sore throat, and we're talking can't swallow sore.

What I do is ginger and lemon black tea, green tea with a bit of clementine juice squeezed in, and like you, chicken broth, but with a lemon squeezed into it.

Years ago someone in a greek show went on a hunger strike. She was told that she could drink juices so she started asking for moussaka juice and baclava juice for lunch and then domades juice for dinner, etc. Maybe you could try it, lol.

Have you considered smoothies or vegetable juices? I have no idea, when I'm sick I just take a bite off something and then I dump it. =/

Hmm..yah i tried the whole lemon juice, hot water and honey to drink..but it burns like acid going down my throat..

And that was where i was at..I would take a gulp of tomato soup and pretty much throw out over half the bowl because it hurt so bad down my throat.. i think acidy things are making it feel worse...

Maybe some bananas or applesauce or plain pasta (maybe a little overcooked to make sure it is soft). A smoothie is a good idea.

How about protein shakes, yogurt (frozen, Greek, or your standard type), pureed soups (like butternut squash, carrot... stuff with vitamins and minerals)... things like that have some protein to them to stave off muscle wasting and are creamy so they should feel okay on your throat.

Yah so far im drinking just my protein shake and chicken broth..i gave up the slurpees and posicles..cause its all sugar... I tried a strawberry smoothie made with frozen strawberries and yougurt and water and banana..it didnt really help at all...im at the point where im only drinking what i need to stop from being hungry..at this point.. i dont care about eating at all..if i could just not eat.. i wouldnt.. i would wait till i was better..but obviously we have to eat something..so im just chugging back whatever goes down easy and healthy..just enough to make me satisified and no grumbling stomach..

Greek yogurt slushie will have a ton of protein. I would say perhaps some blended warm chicken noodle soup.

I had tonsillitis about 2 years ago. Dairy products are discouraged because they cause more mucous to form. I'm not sure if yogurt is included there.

This may be considered horrible advice, but when I have a sore throat I honestly don't worry too much about what I drink or eat. I just do what my throat allows me to do and try to rest as much as I can. I've been known to live almost entirely on chicken soup and cold water until my throat heals. I figure that when I'm really sick like that, all diet bets are off.
