So I'm meeting some friends for our monthly girl-gab fest and they really wanted Korean.
I need some advice on what to order, I was just going to do Dol Sot Bibam Bap, but the calorie counts I'm finding online is a bit off, along with the gochouchang sauce that goes with it. But I think 650 for an estimate sounds fair? Any ideas?
I only ate at one Korean place in my life and have forgotten the menu or what the name was of my dish. Sorry. Did you have a good meal? What did you eat? I know they have great food. My ex-bf is Korean so he was the one who took me there. He was really into kinshi, however he didn't on routine eat anything else. I hope you had fun.
I did! Thanks! I had dol sot bibam bap, without the beef or egg. So it was basically some rice and tons of veggies and dried seaweed in a hot clay pot. I didn't eat all my rice, but I did chow down on my veggies and tons of that red hot sauce paste.
While they all had hot sake, I was satisfied with my hot mandarin green tea. It was yummy
And one of them brought their new baby, so I got to hold it and make faces at it all night, then give it back! I love giving them back lol.
the Korean places we eat at here in L.A. are the kind where you get all you can eat meats and veggies, and cook them on a grill built in to your table. Is this the kind of restaurant you mean? They are Korean BBQ places and you grill the meat yourself so it's fun, and probably pretty low cal considering it's meat. The one we go to we usually have some beef and chicken, and a bunch of mushrooms, squash, carrots, and zucchini...plus they give you big leaves of green lettuce to wrap it in.
Yea, they had that, but since we had a baby with us we didn't go for that option! Too dangerous with little reaching hands and feet. But one of my friends ordered a bulgogi plate and it came with big lettuce leaves to wrap up the goodness in!
I was raised on a lot of Korean food, and you can't really go wrong... Not too many things are that high in calories as long as you stay away from the starches. Although a lot of Korean food is high in sodium, so you might retain water the next day. Beef galbi is a pretty safe choice. Kimchi is low calorie, and depending on how spicy it is, you'll be drinking a lot of water that'll fill you up. If you wanna play it safe, just go for a stir fry and don't touch the rice.
I love Korean food too. Chinese food here in the states is sooo much different from how they actually make it. It's like as soon as they emigrate over and open a restaurant, they change all their recipes to cater to what they think the American palate is; greasy and fried. (I guess that is our palate LOL) The stuff they eat themselves are much lighter, but they cook a lot of weird/gross stuff. I love Thai food. LOVE IT. Japanese food is good too, but I have to be in the mood for it. Dang, now you got me craving Korean!!
I second the salt content.... but boy is bulgogi the best ever. I married into a Korean family and that is by far my favorite. Kimchi is good too, but an acquired taste and most are too spicy for me. I personally skip the octopus :-)
Initially when I answered on this thread I thought my Korean food was so limiteed to Kimchi and one dinner- lol I completely forgot our favorite Teriyaki Bento place is Korean and we hadn't had them for a few months untill last Friday. Omg, they still are pretty yummy.
You could also request brown rice instead of white. Enjoy! I LOVE Korean food! My best friend in high school was Korean and I was often invited to their house for dinner. They loved the fact that I couldn't stand up straight after a meal because I was so full!
