Will You Be Staying Within Your Calorie Limit on Thanksgiving?
I am! I'm making Thanksgiving dinner this year and everything is low calorie (but delicious). No veering off course for me. 2013 is the year I get most (if not all) of these 50 pounds off!
Me too.. I'm running a Turkey Trot with a bunch of friends that morning..So that will put a few calories in the bank And I'll be making a lot of things that we will be having for Thanksgiving, so I'll be in control there... Also I'm planning on getting at least a few people to go for a nice walk after supper instead of just lying around watching football... But even if I don't have any takers there, my dog is always happy to go for a walk with me and maybe we'll even play a little fetch, which is always a good workout, especially since my dog's idea of fetch is really more like a game of keep-a-way where he always wins
Here's hoping everyone here has a Happy Thanksgiving!
We eat healthy as a family, so I'm not worried about overeating or going over my calories. I'll be going to a Spinning class in the morning anyway to offset any potential overages.
my thoughts have always been to enjoy the holiday and then not let it creep over into the days following....i will probably eat what i want on thanksgiving, paying attention to my "full" signals and not getting miserably stuffed...i will probably eat a few pieces of pumpkin pie - i make it myself from fresh pumpkin puree that i also make myself....but the next day i will pick back up and watch my calories and work out..i may also go for a run on thanksgiving IF i have enough time (i'm preparing, by myself, a HUGE dinner for a lot of people)
my mom makes an incredible next-day meal of turkey gravy over biscuits that i will sometimes make and also eat, if there is any turkey left by that time LOL
Im not going to because I cant tell what is in everything but I plan to keep to the veggies and stuff. I dont count on killing myself with food, but I want to enjoy myself.
We had Thanksgiving here on Sat. and I did go over on my calories but not by alot. I'll work out more and eat a little less this week to balance it out. I guess how I do at the inlaws Thursday remains to be seen but I plan to only go over a little.
I will probably eat more calories than I normally do, but I won't be going overboard. I have a plan.
First, for breakfast and lunch I will probably cut back a little on the amount of calories I consume for those meals.
We are having a big Thanksgiving gathering at my house. So in addition to all of the pre-dinner appetizers and sides that are being made for the meal, my wife and I are going to make a few just for us that are lower in calorie.
For the appetizers we are going to make some stuffed mushrooms (no breadcrumbs) and shrimp cocktail (with cocktail sauce made with the Heinz reduced sugar ketchup).
The main course will, of course, be turkey. So, it certainly helps that the protein is the healthiest possible choice to begin with.
For our sides we are going to make a creamed spinach made with fat free half-n-half and a cauliflower mash made, again, with the fat free half-n-half. I will not partake in the stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes or corn pudding. The only thing I'll really miss is the stuffing anyway. I think I might try to make a low calorie gravy using fat free chicken broth and xanthan gum as a thickener.
While I love pumpkin pie, the easiest thing for me to give up is dessert. I'm not really a sweets person. So, I doubt if I'll even bother to make some sort of low calorie dessert.
The last part of the plan is to make sure that all our guests take home all of the leftover food items that are not on our diet plan so that we have no temptation to "taste" any of the scrumptious leftovers.
I realize that there is a strong likelihood that I will eat more calories than I usually do. But with this plan, the damage will likely be minimized.
I guess I should have added that I can lose weight on 1800 calories (albeit slowly), so it won't be much deprivation for me. Still, I'm glad it's me doing the cooking.

Your both very lucky that you have the ability to prepare what you are serving and know whats going into it. I only wish I had that ability, but I figure its a good way to understand that I wont always be able to know what the EXACT calorie count I will have each day. Its like practice for maintenance (that is almost a year away).

Same here. We have always made our meal moderately healthy for at least the past twenty years that I've been helping my mom make it! I never have a problem with overeating, and I'm not a dessert type of person, but I do like alcohol and we tend to drink a lot of it.

There are many instances in which I am not in control over the menu. Just this past weekend we had an entire day going from party to party (3 kids birthday parties and my wife's office holiday party). The first party we went to only had subs, fried chicken fingers, chips and cheese and pepperoni. I am usually on a low carb (south beach style) diet. So, I usually TRY to eat low fat. However, in a pinch I will adopt an Atkins style diet if there are no other options. So, I had a little bit of the cheese and pepperoni slices and took the meat and cheese and veggies off the sub and ate it without the bread. For dinner, they had bbq chicken, cole slaw, mac n' cheese, corn, etc. I wouldn't normally eat the cole slaw because of the mayo, and I wouldn't eat the bbq chicken because of the sauce. But I ate those two things (removed the skin from the chicken and as much sauce as I could remove). I didn't touch the mac 'n cheese or the other stuff. When I weighed in next I had still lost weight, so my "off" day didn't wind up hurting me. To me, its all about making the best choice you can make and limit the damage. Sometimes, when I go out and I know there will be no options for me, I will bring a protein bar with me just in case.
The good thing about Thanksgiving is that you know there will be at least ONE thing you can eat without any issue -- the turkey. After that, all bets are off!
Last night I predetermined my foods at dinner-minus dessert. Today I'm within the correct amount of calories but I didn't make room for salad, instead I ate more green bean and brussel sprouts. I saved 405 cals for dessert later-which will only run me 280 cals. Crossing my fingers that my choices aren't bad to me once I get on the scale tommorrow.
I included a 3 mile walk before and after our feast. It was a beautiful day, so it made it easy to get outside. I enjoyed all my favorite Thanksgiving foods but I used a smaller plate and just took a tablespoon of each and no seconds. Good day overall
