Default Question on smoothies....

I was wondering a few things about smoothies. I have read a lot on them and want to start drinking them.

1. Is it true you should not mix fruit and veggies together in them.
2. I read some people get dizzy from drinking them.(WHY).
3. I read that greens especially kale is high in vitamin K which I believe is a blood thickener so should you have it daily.

And I would love to know what you put in your smoothies.

Thanks for any and all help...

Nope, this is a myth. You can mix any fruits and vegetables that you want (there are certain belief systems/religions/philosophies that oppose mixing certain food together, but there's no science behind this).

Since what constitutes a fruit and what constitutes a vegetable is actually quite arbitrary, this makes absolutely no sense at all. For example tomatoes, avocados, cucumbers, squashes, beans (anything with a seed) are all botanically fruit, but they're often considered veggies, while rhubarb is a vegetable that's generally treated as a fruit.

If you're getting dizzy, it's probably not from the smoothie itself. The most likely cause is a blood sugar/hunger issue if your smoothies are drastically lower in calories or higher in carbs than the meals you're replacing the smoothies with. If your smoothie has enough protein and enough calories, dizziness shouldn't be a problem.

The dizziness is a symptom of either hunger or of a sudden blood sugar drop. Protein and/or fat and sufficient calories will prevents the blood sugar drop.

Eating likewise alleviates the dizziness, but be careful of "treating" the dizziness with simple carbs. Fruit/veggie smoothies without protein will cause sudden blood sugar spikes and then crashes, while fat and protein added will keep blood sugar more stable.

Other symptoms of blood sugar drops are headaches, fatigue, irritability, and nausea.

Unless you have specific health problems and/or are taking blood thinners like coumadin for those health problems, it's extremely unlikely that this would ever be a problem.

Anything in excess can be harmful, but to experience ill effects in most cases, you'ld have to eat tons to have ill effects - and you generally experience uncomfortable effects before you experience dangerous effects.

That is you'd have an uncomfortable symptom like diarrhea long before you'd have to worry about dangerous symptoms like thickening of the blood.

That being said, almost anything is toxic in large enough doses, and some people assume that if a little is good, then as much as you can cram into your body must be even better. So if you tend towards extremes, talk to a medical professional about a safe upper limit. Two or three cups of dark greens per day, probably not going to cause a problem. Six pounds? I don't know.

My normal "formula" is 1 scoop protein powder, 1 cup almond milk or homemade yogurt, and 1 cup frozen fruit. Sometimes (if I'm using undenatured whey protein which dissolves better than conventional proteins) I'll use prepared Crystal Light in place of the milk or yogurt and will add another half scoop of protein.

I usually don't add greens or veggies to mine, because I love veggies and don't want to mask their flavor. I'd much rather eat raw or steamed spinach or kale with a little shake of rice wine vinegar than to put them into a smoothie.

I believe we should have greens daily, but I don't do it in my smoothies, which I hardly have...it's usually just a fruit smoothie when I don't feel like eating the whole fruit.
