Default how to guesstimate how much weight lost?

Hello all,

New here, have posted in the 50+ group and everyone is so nice and helpful.

I may be putting my head in the sand (yes, i am) but i do not have a scale but i have lost a significant amount of weight in the last year, i went from a size 20/22 to a size 12 (12 is a "slender" weight for me although i need to lose more definitely because my body composition has completely shifted from what i was in my 20's and a size 12-to a lot more fatty look esp in the torso!) and i am wondering roughly how much weight do you think that is? i know it probably varies WIDELY maybe depending on the person?

i should try to find a scale, maybe my neighbor has one and i think my Dr has a record of my weight when i was very heavy, it would be interesting and i'll try not to be depressed if it only measures out a few lbs!

it's really hard to guess weight since it fluctuates so often, and 10lbs on one person can look very different than another. i think that its really hard to guess how much weight you've lost just from sizes...

I went from a size tight 18 down to a 10-12 and I lost 55 lbs. I am 5'7 and have a larger frame, so for me, I look pretty thin in a size 12. Hard to say, everyone is different, but I have read that you need to lose a lot more weight to get down from a say a 18 to a 16 then you do from a 10 down to an 8.

Depends on your height and your build. I was, what I would consider, thin when I was a 12 (I'm hippy) and I was between 143 and 159 when I fit into that size. Also I'm 5'6".

I actually just posted a blog tonight with a few pics of myself from back when I was at my lowest weight. I was probably around 150 in all those pics if you wanna take a look. (link in my sig)

I went from a size 16 to a 12, and I lost 40 pounds (I'm 5'5" BTW). That averages about 13 pounds per dress size. Camper, if you go with her lower size, lost about the same.

So maybe you lost somewhere around 80 pounds.

To move down from one plus size to another you generally need to lose around 15-20lbs (maybe more). It took me 20lbs to go from 14/16 to 12, for example. I WAS an 18, needing a 20, but I'm not sure how much I weighed. When you get down to the "regular" sizes you generally need to lost 5-10lbs to move down a size.

It really depends on where your weight is distributed and where you lost it from, but you could have lost anywhere from 40lbs (going by a 10lbs per size rule) to 80lbs (going by 20lbs per size in the plus sizes), maybe more. Either way you've done awesome! Great job!

Why not just buy yourself a scale? Weigh on the same scale all the time for accuracy. Check your doctor's office's records for your weight on a specific date and use it as your starting weight. Make an appointment for a physical now that you're at a healthier weight and see what it is. It is IMPOSSIBLE to guess what you lost based on clothing size. I wear size 10 jeans. Many size 12s fit the exact same way, so I guess I'm also a size 12. I can cram myself into size 8s and if I were 21 instead of 61, I'd be wearing the 8s. Size tells us next to nothing.

That said, you've obviously lost a lot of weight. Congratulations. The number doesn't even matter. I wore size 24 at 250+ and wear size 10 at 161. I'm 5'-7".

Yeah scales are pretty cheap now, might as well get one. I'd probably guess somewhere around 240 to maybe 170 depending on your height?

Thanks everyone

i'm 5'6" and am medium build, certainly not a "small" person and i'm glad to see other size 12's here, i always felt like an odd ball or there was something "wrong" with me that i was never a size 4, 6, 8 like "everyone" else that has lost weight! And i do need to lose more judging by the stubborn fat roll on my abdomen and very tops of my thighs although some i'm sure is loose skin. And yes age certainly does make a huge difference. i didn't even TRY to lose weight for about 17 yrs because of my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and i knew that once i decided, it had to be for good so that is why the redistribution of fat, shape, shocks me as i didn't know that and wasn't prepared for that (age 25 vs age 50!)

i should buy a scale, i think i'm afraid of it and i lived in denial of my weight for so long and i am afraid of seeing a few lbs of gain for fear of what that might do to me emotionally. i guess i have to do what works for me and that is size and fit of my current wardrobe. i cannot go to the doctor as we are very limited income and i have no health insurance sadly. But i do have to say i am proud that i did this all myself. For some reason a light bulb just went off about this time last year and i decided to do it. it definitely has to be a mental choice and decision and to permanently change your life, i had to be ready for that and i don't know WHY i became ready but i am eternally thankful that i DID! And it began with finding out how many calories are in foods (SO DEPRESSING how many there are!) and also the phrase: if you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting the results you've always gotten. That alone changed everything because it made me face i had to do something or i will stay the way i am. Just thought i would share with you all

Thank you so much for the congrats, the only other person of support that i have is my mom (in another state)

Susie

I am 5'6" with a medium build, and started at 265 in a size 20-22 pants. I am now at around 177-180 and wear a size 12 also. I know sizes and weights vary from person to person, but my stats are at least close to yours.
