Unhappy What I Won't Have In Common With Mom

It's with a heavy heart that I'm posting tonight.

I took my mother (59 years young) to the ER today because she was complaining of dizziness. They were treating her for vertigo because she said that she's had those symptoms for a few days. Well, the doctor said that he wanted to do an MRI before he released her and learned that my mom had suffered a series of mini strokes.

My mom suffers from obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and some other minor health issues. I learned that she had not been taking her prescribed hypertension medication for the last week or so and had been ingesting too much sodium. They admitted her and expect to release her in 'a couple of days'. I'm happy to report that she has no paralysis, memory loss and can walk on her own.

This just makes me this much more committed to change my lifestyle again. I had a frank talk with my mom tonight and she says she HAS TO make changes as well.

Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers.

Wow... your mom has dodged a bullet and next time might not be so lucky. She has been given a chance or a wake up call. It's easy to say she needs to change her ways and needs to lose weight, but it needs to be controlled and something she can handle. You don't want drastic changes as then it seems to hard.

If you are going to share a plan with your mom, that's great, you can encourage and praise each other.

You need to work out what foods you eat now and what need to be replaced. Sounds like sugars and fats are something your mom needs to address, so reducing carbs and more protein could be something you look at. Carbs turn to sugar if you don't burn them off, which is where hypertension comes in and to fix the high cholesterol she should look at lean meats for protein.

Best wishes to you and your mom, we are here for both of you

Glad your mom is doing OK and it wasn't worse! I hope this is the wake up call and she gets better about taking care of herself and improving her health!

That's great that she suffered no permanent damage. Ndefinitely motivating for getting your own health ducks in a row, though, isn't it? My family has many congenital conditions and predispositions that obesity aggravates, and so I am very aware of controlling my health NOW, before it deteriorates.

I am sorry to hear about your mom but am happy that she has no long term effects from it..
I can very much relate to this. My mom suffers from the same things your mom does. Hypertension and obesity among other things.. It is not uncommon for her to not take her medication. She has been hospitalized quite a few times for nearly having a stroke. And she continues to eat the worst foods possible. High blood pressure runs in my family so that is definitely a reason to change my lifestyle as well. Good luck to you and your mom! I hope she feels better and makes those much needed changes for her health.
