Is it possible..

  • That calorie counting just won't work for everyone?

I have tried calorie counting a few times. In order to lose two pounds per week, I should be eating around 1500 calories a day. No problem. When I've tried I've always been very close (usually a little less) than my goal. However the weight just will not come off. Period. I would either stay the same or gain. I've tries low Carb and it DOES drop some weight but its obviously very restrictive.

    Any advice?

Do different diets just work differently for different people?
  • How many months are you sticking to this number and the weight isn't coming off?
Have you had your thyroid, etc checked by your doctor?
Are you weighing and measuring your food?
  • Have you ruled out any health issues and/or spoken with your doctor?
  • have you tried calorie cycling? I've been doing a lot of reading about it and it sounds like it's a great way to keep thing moving in the right direction There's a few threads on 3fc, if you do a search for calorie cycling.
  • I've had a complete workup by my PCP. Everything is fine within except being obese. I've even met up with a volunteer dietician at our local health dept. I followed her menu choices precisely. And nothing. The last time I tried was for 3 months at the last quarter of 2011. Over three months time I saw the scale move from 242 to 241.2. In three months. I was walking only during that time from 20-60 mins a day. So its not that I gained a lot of muscle mass. I stopped eating out completely. Did not eat sweets. Frankly plenty of water.
  • Drank** plenty of water

Sorry for typos! Auto correct fail.
  • Have you revisited the dietician and PCP after the 3 months to talk about what might be going on? What happened at the end of 3 months, did you just keep on keeping on or go back to old habits?

This must be so frustrating for you!
  • omg ME TOO!! Granted, I have only been counting for nearly 3 weeks, but honestly I have only lost 0.8 pounds and that was on a good scale day. I have dropped down the calories to 1230 and still absolutely nothing. I'm also going to hot yoga 3-4 times per week (which apparently burns between 500-1200 calories). I'm not hungry. I drink tons of water. WTF is what I say....
  • This sounds kind of familiar to me too! I am counting much more carefully now, but you know, even with averaging things, I was looking over my old food journals from the last year or so that I was tracking, and I was eating about 1600-1800 a day plus tons of walking, and lost nothing. Maybe 1 or 2 pounds total.

Last time I succeeded it was on about 1000/1100 a day and that is hard for me. Right now am walking 3-4 times a week and doing 1300/1400. We'll se if that works!

I don't know why this is like this for you or me...will be reading this thread with interest
  • Eating low cal alone does nothing for me unless I eat way below my allowance which makes me feel miserable and starving. I stick with 1,200-1,500 calories a day with cardio/strength 5-6 days a week. That seems to work best for me...even better if I stay below 1,400.
  • I just started calorie counting and so far so good. I am certainly no expert, but I would ask what foods are you eating?
I am staying under 1,400 calories and I am eating a lot of steamed veggies, a little fruit, some nuts, and basically whole foods.
Does anyone here notice that what they eat, even if they stay at the same caloric intake, makes a difference?
