Talking New vet asst. job and pant/shirt size! Phew!

I've been working at Olan Mills for awhile now as an in between job as I have a degree in Photography. 8 days ago I saw a posting on the internet for a vet assistant needed at Banfield.
I have always wanted to work with animals so I thought, well, I don't have any vet experience but I have plenty of assistant experience so I'll just apply and take my resume in tomorrow to see if they would like an interview. Before I even got my resume and cover letter in the very next morning I got a call back for an interview. I knew it was going well when she asked me if I would like to go on a tour of the hospital and if I'd like to job shadow! I went and filled out my new hire paperwork yesterday! I am SO excited.

Also, we have to wear scrubs, so she looked at me and asked what size I would like and I said, "I honestly don't know with as fast as I'm losing weight, so just put a L for my shirt and an XL for my pants." She said, "Are you sure about that? If you don't mind me asking, what pants size are you because you're about my size." I thought, really? Am I that thin already? I know I look decent now, but she seemed really small to me. I had to call her back later that day because I went to Walmart and the L pants were almost swallowing me whole and a M shirt fit perfectly.

Needless to say I am very excited about both! I start on Monday and I absolutely cannot wait!

Congratulations on the new job! If I could do it all over I would love to work in a vet office. It's my dream job actually. And congratulations again on needing a smaller size than you thought you would! How great was that?

Here's the thing. Scrubs are probably the most confusing item you can buy with regards to size. By the way, I am a vet tech. Congrats on your job- I won't scare you with details....(lol). Can you ask what brand they carry? Some brands have unisex sizing and in that case a large will be bigger than a large in ladies' sizes. Also, a drawstring will fit different than a drawstring with elastic in the back or just straight elastic. I have scrubs that are large and medium and they all fit differently based on brand. Where I work, we get to pick our own scrubs and don't have a standardized uniform. But I tend to buy scrub tops that are printed because they hide urine, feces, anal gland secretions, and blood well. The darker colored pants show hair, but for the above-mentioned reasons, they work well. The Banfield here uses a generic blue, so provided that's the case, you should be ok with stains (and there will be stains). The shirts can be annoying based on whether there's enough room for shoulders and hips. Some cheap tops will not fit right in those areas, and almost feel like they will rip if you move too much. Feel free to pm me if you have questions about the job. I have been doing this for 8 years, so I have seen a little bit of everything. I find that with this job, it's not usually the animals that are the problem, it's the people. Provided you have worked with the mentally unstable public before, you should have a good headstart. One thing I would tell you is don't take it too hard if the other nurses don't act like they are willing to accept your help or trust you at first. Working with animals is dangerous and sometimes you only get one chance to do what you need to do. Just relax and the skills will come in time. Work on restraint first- this is the most important thing.Don't think you have to put a jugular cath in a 1/2 pound puppy on your first day-just be there if someone asks for help, and don't be afraid to clean! Take care and have fun Monday!

I bought women's sizes yesterday and they're true to size because after that I went and tried on regular clothes and they're the same sizes. Everyone seems to be really great there. They're all really excited to have someone new in the office. I'm not squeamish. I once tried to clean maggots out of a kitten's leg when I was around 15 and I've saved a bunch of animals as I lived on a farm growing up. Thanks for the help! I will PM you if I can think of anything.
