Too much fat grams for the day? Someone, help me out here!

  • I enjoy eating protein and lowish carb. But I can't seem to control the fats in my diet!
For example, today I was planning to have 2 tbsp peanut butter, a full serving of almonds, and a medium sized avocado for a salad, considering I need more calories for the day. Is this too much fat? I'm trying to lose off 1,300 calories.
  • Same here...!!!!!!!!...i just eat home made food and healthy food...still the fat % is high...

Its sooo unbelievably aggravating!! Its hard for me to get in enough calories without the fatty foods unless I'm gonna add in more carbs or protein. wah
  • Fat isn't the horrible thing everyone thinks it is...ESPECIALLY if the fat you're getting is good fats! Getting your fat from something like an avocado is great! It's a super food and it's REALLY GOOD for you! Nuts and other similar items also have good fats

If you do want a low fat version of peanut butter though, you can always try some PB2.
  • they all sound like good fat. If you are controlling your overall calorie intake, these fat dont actually make you fat. I read in a book by Sandra Cabot that these fat actually help your body in losing the fat around the tummy area and help with fatty liver. So eat them with joy and without feeling guilty!
  • Fat is not bad for you. Your body needs fat. Plant-based fats are healthier than animal fats, so I say you are making great choices!!

What is "high" to you? I usually average around 30% calories from fat.
  • It's high because that's what stupid old calculators say - too high. I hate those things.

Calories have to come from fat, carbs or protein. If you limit one, you have to raise others.

Fats have gotten a bad rap for no reason and nuts and avocado fats are GOOD FOR YOU as they also hold a lot of trace vitamins/minerals.

I eat a high fat diet and my cholesterol is STILL going down 189 last check. When I was eating a high carb diet? it was 240. Most of my fats though are from peanut butter and nuts, but I also eat dairy - full fat.

THIS, a million times over! If you're on a carb controlled diet (I am too) you're going to have to raise your fats to compensate. I eat tons of avocados, coconut oil, full fat dairy, and nuts. Dietary fat does not = fat on your bum. Your body uses it. Sugar is more likely to be metabolized into body fat.
  • mmm, delicious delicious fat. It burns slow in the body which helps keep you fuller longer - longer than protein and certainly longer than carb alone. Fat helps keep our skin supple, elastic, and hydrated. Fat keeps our nails and hair from breaking. Fat is essential for all sorts of biochemical processes in our bodies. And fat just tastes good, which satisfies you mentally and emotionally!

Fat is NOT the enemy, and eating fat will not make you fat unless you are eating it in absurd quantities (but as we know, moderation in all things is key). Hope that helps you feel better about your intake!
  • My fat intake is generally between the 40-50% range. I know someone will read this and cringe but I agree with Val. Eating fat doesn't make you fat.
  • I have to confess... my fat intake is fairly high, too. I did low carb for YEARS and even with eating lower calorie, I still find myself not eating processed carbs like before. So, my cals do include a lot of fat. And I HATE low fat items. BLEH. I am willing to try some strictly for variety (Laughing cow cheese I've heard is good!) but not just to save cals. The only low fat thing I've liked so far (and that's because I grew up eating it) is low fat fig newtons! LOL I think the regular ones taste weird. HA!
