Default How to count calories in chicken soup

Question... generally when counting calories, I portion off the food and count calories for individual portions. So eg. if I am having "cabbage spaghetti" i count the calories for 100g beef, 2 cups of cabbage, quarter of onion etc. then cook that. Now with winter coming (i'm in australia) I want to make chicken cauliflower soup. How do I count calories for it? I am using skinless boneless chicken thighs, chicken drumsticks, onions and cauliflower. So I was thinking of just counting total calories for everything, then porition them equally (by weight) and divide the total calories by whatever number of portion. It just seems so OCD though! Does anyone have a better way of counting calories? Also do I assume that the chicken stock will be included as part of the overall chicken calories because its water and chicken bits? I love calorie counting because it does work (although lately I find I dont record my calories if ive been bad... FAIL!) but sometimes its so much work!! xo

For soups, I add the total calories for each food, then divide that total into the number of servings I'm getting out of it. I don't have a food scale, so I don't weigh the portions, but I figure if one is a bit bigger, another will be a bit smaller and the calories will even out.

Yes, how you describe is how you would do it. I have done the same thing for recipes in the past. For example a cake recipe where I added the cals for flour, sugar etc and then divided by the portions I would cut the cake into.

And yes, its a pain to do LOL! But once you have you've got the numbers so can jot them in your recipe book or calorie journal for next time.

Sometimes I feel like I need a math degree to figure this stuff out. Chicken soup has been a fail for me calorie counting wise. I make huge pots of the stuff and usually estimate depending on my bowl size and noodle portion..

I add together the individual calorie counts of the ingredients and then I usually divvy it all up into 1 cup containers to freeze, so depending on how many cups, I just divide by that number. If I really don't want to count, I usually go with 175 calories per cup of homemade chicken noodle soup.
