First time seeing Endocrinologist... not sure what to do or say

  • hello all,

I was told i have pcos yesterday. So it is all still sinking in. I feel overwhelmed by everything. But it is nice to know that im not crazy and I am actually sick. What should i expect at the Endocrinologist? Should i have any certain questions. Im just not sure about it all. Im so tired for fighting to find out whats going on. Im nervous that this doctor isn't going to listen like the other.

    Super thanks for reading
  • When I went to my endocrinologist I told him I was there because I had been diagnosed with PCOS. From there he examines any excess hair I have (it is recommended you not get rid of any hair on the chin, lip, etc but you can under you arms and your legs before an appointment). He checked for all the traditional symptoms of PCOS and ordered blood and urine samples to check insulin and vitamin levels. I had a friend there taking notes for me and to make sure I asked all the questions I needed to (I was 17 at the time) He went over my treatment options with me and we made a plan. Overall I found he listened more than any other doctor had.

The endocrinologists job is to help balance your hormones. If you find you don't like the one you see then try seeing a reproductive endocrinologist (more of a cross between an obgyn and an endocrinologist) and keep switching docs till you fine one you like. I know it is a pain but a lot of doctors don't know very little if anything about PCOS so it is important to find one that will listen and put what you need first over what they think you need. Good luck with the appointment and welcome to the PCOS thread We have ALL been there and are here to support you!
  • Make sure you are going to a reproductive endocrinologist as opposed to a metabolic endocrinologist.
  • Here is the faq... roll down the to section about what to note down, what to ask, dx things like labs, etc
