would you buy some bargin clothes in smaller sizes?
I know alot will say ............but you never know what size ull be etc etc
But is there anything really the matter with picking up a few bargin items? For motivation?
I want to stock up on a few casual items , for my wedding next year as were going abroad and were spending loads and having to buy things throughout the year rather than all at once.
My main dresses etc ect and going out stuff will be bought at goal but im aiming for a size 12 im now 16/18
I just thought picking up a few bargin items for lounging in the day , tshirts , shorts , etc etc wouldnt harm would it? Or am i crackers haha
Well you're going to need clothes for the "transition" phase, right? If you're getting the clothes cheap then there's nothing wrong with buying something now—especially if say you may not be able to snag these deals later on.
Just be aware that what styles look good on you now may not suit your smaller body. I've had to buy clothes in a style I never would have at my highest weight, so if I were to have bought the clothes I wear but in a smaller size then I would be stuck with clothes that fit but do not look good.
I did it when they were dirt cheap and I knew I'd wear them for sure. For instance, I bought 6 pairs of used pants for something like $30 and they came in various sizes. I've worn/am wearing 4 of them already and still have 2 left that I don't quite fit into. It was a great deal. However, I knew they'd fit more or less because casual pants with stretch are pretty easy for me to find (jeans are another matter all together!!!) so I went for it.
I recently did the same with bras (again used/almost new ones) in a few sizes for very cheap. However, as am I'm pretty much in the smallest band size that's semi-available (28 band) so even if I do drop a band size I'll have to get bras altered down so it seemed to make sense to get a few different cup sizes and just go with alterations as I lose. Also, I have a friend close to my size so if they never work she'll just inherit them.
However, if it's something that's at all iffy and/or you wouldn't be willing to pay/do alterations yourself I'd probably advise against it. Here in Brazil alterations are very cheap (and I know how to sew some too) so I'm more willing to buy something that's a good deal because I can fix it if it's more or less in my size range. If you're not wiling to do that then I'd probably avoid buying too much.
I find that they may not look as good or fit as well as I thought they would and that money is wasted. Save the money for future shopping and wait.
I agree with this. I'm all for saving money wherever possible; esp with clothes. And my newest idea of supplementing my weight loss attitude is to not have clothes that do not fit, whether too big or too small.
I just did this, I bought a pair of jeans in an online sale but as soon as I'd pressed buy I started to doubt it.
The jeans are a size or more smaller than what I fit in at the moment, and they are a skinny fit, something I've never dreamed of wearing when I've been bigger. So, even though it was a bargain I really doubted I'd done the right thing.
When they arrived yesterday, I wasn't even going to try them on 'cos I thought it'd depress me seeing how far I have to go. But, curiosity got the better of me, so I tried them on, and WOW I had an amazing surprise! They are a little tight, but only a little, and they make my bum and legs look GREAT! Way better than the baggy/stretchy stuff I'm so used to wearing.
Now it's a really motivator to lose just a little more so I can start wearing them. I know when I do my efforts will really start to show!
So, I say, if you're getting a bargain go for it! But do bare in mind what's been said about styles that suit you changing as you lose
I just did it so I'm going to have to say go for it. I bought some large shirts and size 12 shorts for when it's warmer because I had a 30% off coupon.
I buy clothes from second hand stores all the time (super broke college student who is a naturally really cheap).... Anyways, if I find a pair of pants in a size to small then I do buy them. I'm actually wearing a pair right now that I had to hang on to for 4 months before I could fit into them. However, I was really happy when I decided I should "try them on again for fun" and they actually fit.
I wouldn't buy things that are more than 1 size, MAYBE 2 sizes too small. it's hard to know what season it will be when you get to that size too. That is the biggee for me. I bought a super, duper cheap pair of khakis in late spring in 2 sizes down figuring I would be that size in the fall. No... I was that size in the middle of summer. I never wore them once before donating them. I lost faster than I thought I would. And I easily could have lost LESS than I thought I would have and still be waiting to fit into them.
So... do it with caution. Cheap is still too expensive if you never get to wear it.
I would only do this with staples like lounge pants and t shirts. I've had it go both ways. I've bought jeans and been able to wear them later but I've also lost money this way too. Case in point, I have this cute pink shirt that was just a little tight in the arms but I bought it any way thinking it would work out. The body of that shirt is big on me now but the sleeves are still too tight. By the time I get my arms to fit that shirt, it will look ridiculous in the torso. So yeah, buying ahead of time can be hit or miss and you might waste money on something that may never work out. I prefer to just buy something I can enjoy right now.
I was thinking about doing this but I'm hesitant to buy clothes that I cannot try on. There are clothes that look great on the rack but look horrible on me. I see something for a really deep discount I might pick it up so if I don't like it then its not that much of a loss, but otherwise I'd rather just wait until I can actually try it on.
I think it depends on the item. Last January I set out to lose all the weight in about a year. I knew I'd need all new winter clothes. Winter clothes were on clearance at that time. I bought sweaters. No need for an exact fit like with pants. I figured I would be able to get by with one or two pairs of jeans if I had several sweaters. They all fit and I saved a ton.
I'd stay with knit tops and casual pants because fit isn't as critical.
I actually did this right after Christmas with some pants at Target for 75% off. I was wearing the plus size version of the same pant and bought the Miss version about 1.5 sizes down. I just started wearing them and it worked out ok. I would not do this for a ton of clothing or clothing that is way too small.
Several of you have brought up some good points. Buy things you can wear for all seasons. Make sure your bra is updated with your current measurements.
This clothing thing is my biggest issue about weightloss. It is not the "being fat" part that
is bugging me any more. It's the fact that I don't look my best but am afraid to spend any money on clothing. I can't justify spending money on something I am not sure I will use, yet I have somehow become addicted to shopping....or trying on clothing. I have bought a few things but not sure if my money was well spent.
My original size blouses are still passable but not ideal, so I should wait to buy but I feel like I don't look my best and I am not sure how to help this. Perhaps I should get a hair cut and buy shoes instead???? I am a SAHM so I don't need to dress up.( my work clothing has been sitting for a year.

Oh yeah this happened to me. At the end of the summer when things were on clearance I bought some shorts in size 6, thinking that that would be the smallest size I would get into. I only spent about $10 on a few pairs so it's not all that bad, but I certainly WILL NOT fit into them this summer and I'm going to need to buy smaller clothes when the summer roles around. I like my shorts a little big, but these are too big for me to wear comfortably
Luckily my mom can probably get some use out of them.
