ways to get healthy fats

  • we are supposed to get 2 servings of healthy fats every day. How are people doing that? just in salad dressing?
Today I added 15 g of pecans into my breakfast of fibre 1, raspberries and greek yogurt. That wound up being 3 points, just in the nuts, so breakfast total was 7 points.
We talked at the meeting last night about avacodos, or guacamole being a source of healthy fat. FOr diabetic food exchange in fact, avacados are not a fruit or veggie, but a fat!
What do others use for their fats?
  • The things you mentioned are not healthy OILS which is what WW requires. They have to be pourable. I use my oil on salads, put it on oatmeal, drip bread in it, cook with it, have it on a baked potato or vegetables. Look over your materials again.
  • Quilter, reading over the materials, I would not say this is clear. There is good evidence that eating one's fats in nuts and avocado's or olives is a reasonable approach. At meetings, both leaders have advocated this. Also, avocados are mostly monounsaturated fat, and have only a little saturated fat.
In my recipe book, the guacamole recipe is called a source of healthy fat.
I think the main thing is to make sure the amount is appropriate and we watch serving size.
  • I think that technically Quilter is correct that it is only healthy oils which "count" as per WW officialdom.

That said, I also think that healthy fats such as in nuts meets the spirit of the requirement and is the one that I follow (I get mine primarily from nuts).
  • I actually put a touch of guacamole on smoked turke slices and roll it up as a snack it equals out to two points and is delish.
  • Per the "official" good health guidelines it is healthy oils, but I know others have gone the healthy fat route with the approval of their leader as it can be considered in the spirit of the requirement.
  • Agreeing with the previous posters who say that "officially" it is healthy oils.

However, I tend to personally follow the healthy fats idea, as it gives me more variety. I can use nuts, healthy oils, avocado, even dairy products to get in a balanced amount of fat into my diet. Of course, YMMV.

For a little bit of "TL;DR" feel free to see further:

I think healthy oils are pushed, because they are a very clean, and easy way to get in healthy fats. They're easily used in all sorts of cooking, they hide well, and most people don't have a problem with fitting oil into their day. When looking up the nutritional information for Olive Oil (one of the healthy oils promoted) you can see that 100% of the calories comes from Fat. It's a no-nonsense way of getting in healthy fat into our diets. After all, being on a completely fat free diet would be awful for our health.
