having tried everything, I've decided to use a forum in the hope that mutual support will help me achieve what alternate diets and exercise regimes have not.
I'm extremely short at 5"2, and weigh 11 st 8. I used to be 10 st, but then I went to Uni and gained the notorious "Fresher's Stone". I've tried exercise and diets but my will is appalling and all my friends are so skinny that I find myself thinking "What's the point when I'll never be as thin as them anyway".
Please please please, I need someone to help me motivate myself- I'm done with being told I'm fine the way I am, I haven't felt fine in a long long time.
With a university schedule and countless essays, I'm frequently sat on my butt all day at a computer, and alcohol consumption is high...I need to ease myself into this. What would you suggest?
Yes! you can stop this weight increase! Do a bunch of reading here at 3FC. Check out what other folks are doing. Find a couple of threads where you feel comfortable and come back to them several times a day. We're here for you!
I am struggling with alcohol! Its so bad for you. I'm going out tomorrow and I will drink vodka and 0 sugar lemonade and lime, or pepsi max! 55 calories per shot as opposed to 200 calories per pint!
I hate vodka but I'd prefer to use the calories on food I dont know how I'll resist the end of night cheesy chips! Eek!
hey- thankyou for being so lovely I've been trying to cut back on alcohol calories by having slimline G and Ts and the like, but its hard in a student environment! I just don't understand how I keep going up- my diet isn't ideal but it's hardly awful!
I'd recommend cutting alcohol entirely if you're trying to lose weight. Alcohol is not only empty calories but it decrease inhibition (thus makes it harder for you to say no to food) and it makes you crave sugar. Save alcohol for celebrations...and try not to celebrate more than once a month or so.
Other than that I recommend spending time here at 3FC. You can discuss exercise, diet and motivation with other 3FC'ers and get daily support.

Does your uni have a gym? You may get a good student discount! But i'd reccommend not going with friends, your more likely to chat and not work out as much... Try classes they're so much easier as your more 'forced' to work up a sweat! Spin is quite good because you dont need to be co-ordinated, theres loud music and your garenteed to work out hard. When I joined the gym the instructor said eat healthier, go to the gym, do weights and ONE spin class a week and I'd see results.
I went up to 11.4 at uni due to my love of cider, (as all my friends have also gained weight!) It is hard to avoid! Luckily in my third year I cant afford the time to go out as much, I have my dissertation and part time job keeping me busy!

I'm a third year too so I'm hoping essays keep me focussed and away from the clubs! I drank litres of cider next year, love the stuff- couldn't have chosen a worse beverage in terms of weight gain! Glad to know there's someone else in my situation!
Peachyfuzz, welcome, glad to have you join us. I suggest you look for a Challenge or Support group to join; small check-in groups make it easier to connect, get involved, and be accountable. We have groups centering around specific diets, themes, or age groups, find one that inspires you and just post to join!
think what you really need is to improve your self image. You recognize that what you are doing is unhealthy, and it looks like you clearly want to change, so I think that you really can beat this.
Contrary to popular belief, weight training doesn't mean you have to live in the gym. You can spend a moderate amount of time lifting weights (45 minutes 3 times a week) and you will actually see huge benefits. Much bigger than if you spent all day in the gym. The reason for this is that your muscles need time to recover after exercising them, and if you don't give them that time, they will not be able to rebuild and repair themselves.
Weight training will also help you keep the fat off and stay healthy at the same time. And if you eat normal amounts of food, you will develop lean, toned muscles. And I think that's probably what you need. Talk to someone you trust to help you develop a good program that will work for you, spend a bit of time in the gym, and I think you'll be well on your way to a healthy self image.
