I just did Leslie Sansone's Walk Slim 5 Really Big Miles. I only did 3 of the miles, plus the warm up. However, my pedometer reads that I have only gone less than two miles! I know that you have to set it up differently for running, and there is a little light jogging in Leslie's workout, plus a variety of other movements...could that be what is affecting it? I am not really familiar with pedometers yet. Thanks
Walking in place is totally different than walking outside. First, pedometers measure steps in lots of different ways. The most common being that is just counts the movement of your leg as a step. However, when walking inside, maybe your steps aren't as big so every step isn't registering. Also, if you are walking on carpet it will register differently as it won't "feel" every step like it would outside. I would say if you are trying to do a set number of miles (like 3 miles daily) go to an outdoor track or treadmill to track your distance. But distance isn't everything. Intensity level and time also are important. So if you are just looking for 30 minutes of exercise, and you walk indoors for 30 minutes, you are good to go!
I noticed that also when I first got a pedometer and did a Leslie dvd.
I decided that it really doesn't matter if they agreed or not. I just do a workout and not worry about the numbers.
That's what I was thinking, but like I said, I am not really familiar with how a pedometer works. Thanks for the advice! Definitely was a work out, that's for sure!
You really should not rely too much on the pedometer, they are not accurfate at all IMO... I've had my pedometer count steps when I was sitting down because of movement when turning around in my chair ...
BUT they are a fun gauge to try and better yourself daily on the number of steps you've taken...
Do the DVD but don't count them as steps but continue counting your steps the rest of the day...
You are probably not walking in place five miles, but when you walk outside, you are not swinging your arms around and doing all the things you are doing while doing the DVD either. You will find, too, that when you start walking outside 5 miles, you will feel it more than walking in place too as you use different muscles, but it's all ok. Because....
Just realize movement is movement. One hour of walking or one hour of dancing or one hour of raking or one hour of scrubbing floors is all movement and all burns calories and raises the heartbeat. That is all that really matters.
I've never worn a pedometer but I've worn a bodybugg/Body Media Fit band that measures the calories I burn. And I am shocked when I do 2-3 miles of Leslie's DVD I can burn 700-900 calories! To me, it's about the burn (and moving) not the "distance" because I know I am walking in my bedroom.
Thanks, ladies! I want a bodybugg, but it's not in my budget right now :P I guess I was just curious about the accuracy of a pedometer, but everything you are all saying makes perfect sense. Thanks for giving me that little reminder that it's all about the movement I do enjoy looking at my pedometer, even though I get mad at it when I walk around my office for 15 minutes and it only registers 6 steps, lol. It has been fun to try out, and is definitely making me more conscious of how much I walk.
